Deadline reports that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse had a record breaking preview night, pulling in $17.35 million on its initial Thursday night screenings. These numbers are especially commendable, placing the 140 minute animated movie firmly in second place behind The Incredibles 2 in the category, which boasted an $18.5 million turnout on its preview night in 2018. If the preview night numbers are any indication of what’s to come, it’s safe to say that Across the Spider-Verse may quite possibly give Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl a run for their money with its total opening weekend numbers.

Across the Spider-Verse not only had an epic turnout for its Thursday night preview showing, but shattered the numbers of 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse, which pulled in $3.5 million before totaling out at $35.3 million for its opening weekend numbers. If stateside projections track at this current trajectory, it’s possible that Across the Spider-Verse can pull in anywhere from $75-90 million on its three-day opening run. Even at the low end, the sequel will pull box office numbers that double its predecessor.

Comparing these projections to The Incredibles 2’s total opening weekend box office numbers, which currently holds the record for the animated movie category with an intimidating $182.6 million, it may be too early to tell if Across the Spider-Verse is capable of trouncing these numbers. It’s not outside of the realm of possibility, however, considering how well the film is already performing. Once the weekend passes, we’ll have a better picture on where Across the Spider-Verse stands in the overall rankings.

What’s more, Across the Spider-Verse‘s 140 minute runtime is a record in and of itself, placing the animated film in seventh place alongside Kyoto Animation’s Violent Evergarden. It’s no mystery that movies geared towards kids are getting into some risky territory when they boast such a long runtime. Even adults have trouble sitting still for that long, but if you throw some excited kids and an extra-large ICEE into the mix, it’s oftentimes its a recipe for disaster.

Luckily, Across the Spider-Verse is such an engaging film, that nobody seemed to mind the length of the film. In fact, Across the Spider-Verse is slinging high above its contemporaries on Rotten Tomatoes with a critic score of 96 percent, and an even better audience score of 97 percent. In other words, it’s clear that there is not a single minute of wasted screen time in this Marvel animated film.

Reports indicate that 39 percent of the audience was males and females over 25 years old, meaning Across the Spider-Verse definitely has universal appeal and isn’t just for kids despite its PG rating. In fact, the combined numbers for parents accompanied by kids for Across the Spider-Verse were tallied at 16 percent, meaning a healthy amount of adults showed up just because they wanted to pick up where Into the Spider-Verse left off, not because their kids begged them to bring them out.

Though we’ll have to wait until Monday to get the final opening weekend numbers, it’s already evident that Across the Spider-Verse is not only going to be profitable against its $100 million budget throughout its entire theater run, but may even be well on its way to the number one spot in place of The Incredibles 2.
