Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse New Details Reveal How Many Dimensions We’ll See
Across the Spider-Verse will feature five new alternate dimensions.
It seems that the upcoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse movie will take place over five different dimensions, presumably not including protagonist Miles Morales’s (Shameik Moore) home reality. According to a new article in Empire, the new film will take place at various points in realities referred to as Mumbattan, Nueva York, New London, Earth-65, and a mysterious, unnamed dimension being closely hidden from potential leaks. As writer-producer Christopher Miller says of Across the Spider-Verse, “The first film was about bringing characters into Miles’ dimension… This is about Miles heading off into others.”
Across the Spider-Verse is the sequel to 2018’s acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which was widely applauded for its eclectic, kinetic CGI animation; while the first movie had brief flashes of other dimensions all drawn in different styles, it appears the sequel is going all in on them. Reportedly, each of the five alternate dimensions will be animated in its own aesthetic, so this new movie should be a very impressive visual feast.
The new dimensions that will appear in Across the Spider-Verse seem to be loosely drawn from Marvel Comics. Nueva York is a futuristic version of Spider-Man’s typical home of New York City, inhabited by Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), who is apparently the only variant of the character without a sense of humor. Mumbattan seems to be a South Asian variant of New York City, the home of Spider-Man India (Karan Soni).
New London is a British punk version of the typical Spider-story, this time with Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya) fighting against an authoritarian government. We have already seen Earth-65 in brief glimpses, being the home of the Spider-Gwen version of Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) from the first movie.
While there is no information on the mysterious fifth new dimension in Across the Spider-Verse, it is a strong probability that it will be a live-action reality. While we cannot be sure that it will be the mainstream Marvel Cinematic Universe, we have previously reported that Tom Holland may be appearing as Peter Parker in the new movie as well as Donald Glover as a variant of the villainous Prowler.
While details of the plot of Across the Spider-Verse are still pretty thin, it seems that Oscar Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099 is the leader of a group of Spider-people attempting to protect the multiverse from the Spot (Jason Schwartzman) who can travel between universes at will. In addition to the Spider-Man variants above, we’ll also get Jake Johnson’s schlub of a Peter B. Parker, Issa Rae’s Spider-Woman, and a whole bunch more, including the Scarlet Spider, the Superior Spider-Man, and just a whole lot of Parkers.
Across the Spider-Verse has already been announced as a two-part movie, with the first installment arriving in theaters on June 2 and the second in March 2024. A third movie titled Beyond the Spider-Verse is already in production, while a spin-off focusing on various variants, including Spider-Man Noir, is also coming down the pipeline.
