Aaron Taylor-Johnson is swapping out his speedster spandex for a completely different look in another superhero franchise. This time, he’s headed to the other side of the battle having been cast as a villain (or at best, antihero) in the next film for Sony in their Marvel stable of characters. Taylor-Johnson is going to play Kraven the Hunter and we already have our first glance of what he might look like as the character.

The new images of Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Kraven the Hunter come from Instagram user Bosslogic and show the actor with a very Siberian and Arctic feel. He’s got the fur-lined overcoat we know from the comics and there’s the presence of the wolf heads as well, giving an ominous feel for what Taylor-Johnson could bring here. It’s quite divergent from the previous role he had in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will set the actor on quite a different path, likely coming at odds with Spider-Man at some point in the future. This casting of Aaron Taylor-Johnson was just made official on Wednesday and will be the next movie from Sony in their universe of characters loosely set around the Spider-Man franchise. They’ve been developing these for some time now, operating outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a collection that includes Venom which is getting its sequel soon, but also Morbius as well. This Kraven the Hunter film will slot in alongside those films with the studio taking an interesting and somewhat necessary path with the brands and characters they still retain control over.

Whether Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Kraven the Hunter ever comes into contact or conflict with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man remains to be seen. Technically, Sony still has control over that character though they’ve worked out a deal with Marvel to have the latter slot Spidey into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These other characters don’t have the same flexibility, yet. While Taylor-Johnson isn’t set to appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home  (that we know of) there’s a chance for it to go down sometime in the future. These universes are nothing if not fluid.

When Aaron Taylor-Johnson picks up with Kraven the Hunter, he could have a little bit of overlap with his previous turn in the Marvel Universe. Kraven is a Russian big game hunter who is constantly trying to take out the web-slinger as part of a trophy collection. Previously, Taylor-Johnson had played the MCU’s Quicksilver as Pietro Maximoff. He was of Eastern European descent in that one, though didn’t last long and only appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Before he steps into the fur-lined hunter’s jacket, Aaron Taylor Johnson has another big flick coming out this year. That will be The King’s Man which will be the third film in the Kingsman franchise though it will go back in time to the origin story behind the spy group. That’s set to come out in December of this year. And there’s also been talk of reviving the Kick-Ass franchise as well which would keep the actor more than a little busy with action films.
