Amazon is taking a swing at a reboot of A League of Their Own and they just released a first-look teaser trailer. The brief teaser is set to the tune of “Edge of Seventeen,” by Stevie Nicks and we get to see some of the characters, with quite a few shots of baseball action mixed in. Check out the teaser trailer for the A League of Their Own series below:

If you missed the classic original movie from 1992, you can check it out on Amazon as well. A League of Their Own told the story of two sisters joining the first female professional baseball league. It starred a team of female baseball players portrayed by Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell, Megan Cavanaugh, Tracy Reiner, and many more. Tom Hanks played their manager. Penny Marshall directed the script by Lowell Ganz, based on the story by Kim Wilson and Kelly Candaele. The original movie was charming and fairly beloved, with 80% from critics and 84% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie even nabbed some Golden Globes nominations. Its unique story in the sports world was charming and enjoyable to watch, so hopefully, the new series will bring similar energy to audiences.

The Amazon A League of Their Own series will depict the same era, where the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was formed in 1943 to keep baseball popular in America after much of the MLB was drafted to serve in World War II. The series will focus on a different team than the one in the movie, so it’s not a complete reboot so much as a separate storyline from the same time in history. The new series will star Abbi Jacobson, who also co-created the series with Will Graham. Both serve as executive producers on the series as well.

Chanté Adams, D’Arcy Carden, Roberta Colindrez, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Kelly McCormack, and Priscilla Delgado all co-star as the other players on the team with Nick Offerman playing their manager. The cast list is rounded out by  Saidah Arrika Ekulona, Kate Berlant, Kendall Johnson, Alex Désert, Aaron Jennings, Molly Ephraim, Melanie Field, and Dale Dickey. Apparently, Rosie O’Donnell is set for a guest role, though it is not known if it will be connected to her role in the original A League of Their Own movie.

Hailey Wierengo and Desta Tedros Reff and Jamie Babbit also executive produce, with Babbitt directing the first episode. Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television co-produce. The series, like the movie, should have a lot of heart, comedy, and even give us a lesson in some female sports history. The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, of course, was a real part of American history, so it’ll be interesting to see this story told from another angle. From the teaser, it seems like this show will definitely bring be a worthy successor to the 1992 original. We’ll probably get a full trailer before the official release, but until then, you can count on seeing the series premiere on August 12.
