Netflix has a whole heap of new content arriving in September. Titles such as Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Rock of Ages, and Scarface will be landing on the streaming giant next month. As well as these beloved movies, a comedy favorite that kills off all of its stars will be available on September 16th to stream on Netflix, This is the End.

The new Netflix addition This is the End was released in 2013. Evan Goldberg directed the comedy extravaganza with his frequent collaborator Seth Rogen and the pair also penned the screenplay for one of the zaniest films in recent memory. The story follows Seth Rogen and his longtime friend Jay Baruchel (She’s Out of My League) as fictionalized versions of themselves with Baruchel feeling out of touch with Rogen who is now a big Hollywood star. The pair head to a party at James Franco’s house where every famous face under the sun is in attendance, from Rihanna to Aziz Ansari. Whilst at the party, Judgement Day unfolds and most of the A-List stars in attendance perish. The horrific events leave Rogen, Baruchel, Franco (The Disaster Artist), Danny McBride (Pineapple Express), Jonah Hill (22 Jump Street), and Craig Robinson (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) as the core group that has survived and the comedy legends do their best to co-exist in this post-apocalyptic world. Whilst juggling a scenario of Biblical proportions, the group learns that they must prove themselves worthy to ascend into heaven, but a fracture in the group dynamic threatens their plans for eternal salvation. The film is complimented by amazing cameos from the likes of Emma Watson, Channing Tatum, and The Backstreet Boys.

With This is the End, Netflix adds a comedy that delivers continual gags and delightful self-mockery, as well as finding the time to deliver a heartfelt message during the film’s closing act. It is clear throughout that the leading cast had shared the screen countless times before as they cohabit each scene delightfully, comically sparring and it never feels as if the film overlooks one cast member for another. All these facets helped contribute to the critical reception that This is the End received, with an 83% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with many critics sighting that despite the film’s crazy premise, it is an offering familiar to previous work from Rogen and Goldberg, but no worse off for it. As the old saying goes, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” The formula set in films such as Pineapple Express helped This is the End achieve a worldwide gross of $126 million at the Box Office off of a budget of $32 million.

The stars of the new Netflix addition This is the End are still going strong in the world of Hollywood. Seth Rogen will be starring in Steven Spielberg’s new movie The Fabelmans, set for a release this November. Jay Baruchel will be starring in the spy series Utap and James Franco has recently been cast to play Fidel Castro in a biopic about the Cuban revolutionary. Jonah Hill was a part of the ensemble cast in the Oscar Nominated 2021 Netflix movie Don’t Look Up and has even taken to directing in recent years with efforts such as the 2018 movie Mid90s. Danny McBride is an integral part of HBO Max’s award-winning comedy series The Righteous Gemstones and Craig Robinson has been a mainstay in American comedy television throughout the last decade, with iconic guest characters such as the infamous Doug Judy in Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

The longevity of all of This is the End’s stars in the Hollywood landscape is proof of how great a comedy team the film must delight audiences throughout. It is a film that is almost too crazy to comprehend and if it wasn’t for the likes of Sausage Party, would likely be the most oddball product on all the lead actors’ CVS. Nevertheless, the film’s crazy premise and use of fictionalized versions of its very real comic stars make it a fan favorite and it is almost certain that This is the End and Netflix will be a potent combination, drawing subscribers new and old to the platform. It would be no surprise to see This is the End near the top of Netflix’s charts come the 16th of September.
