Upcoming Zombie Trilogy Blockbuster Shot On An iPhone

By Doug Norrie | Published

Ever look at your iPhone and think, “Man, I could make a whole movie just using this thing.” Well, friends, you aren’t too far off. In fact, there are movies coming out now, on massive budgets, being shot on nothing but iPhones with some moderate upgrades. Such is the case with 28 Years Later and iPhones.

The upcoming movie by Danny Boyle and crew which used just cellphone cameras over the summer to complete production. You have no excuses now to not get the movie made (assuming you have $75 million dollars, the budget for the film).

28 Years Later On iPhone

In a recent report by Wired, 28 Years Later went through all of its production over the summer using retrofitted iPhones as the core filming device.

This piece of movie news was kept very tightly under wraps by the production crew, with everyone involved having to sign an NDA keeping it secret. They even went as fas as to set up larger cameras on the sets, either because they were housing the iPhones, or just simply as head fakes to prying paparazzi and fan eyes.

Special iPhone Devices

Time will tell just how much the 28 Years Later iPhone implementation really worked and if they made made best use of these iPhone 15 Pro Max devices for shooting the whole movie.

According to the reporting and the speculation, the 28 Years Later iPhones were housed in an aluminum cage design that allowed for different lenses.

So, not exactly you walking on to the street, hitting record and thinking you have a zombie thriller on your hands. Far from it, but maybe not too far.

Most Expensive On iPhones

The 28 Years Later iPhone production happened over the summer and was kept under wraps the whole time. While some had speculated the film was making significant use of the iPhone Pro Max tech, it was not confirmed until recently.

And while there have been plenty of other movies shot with just cellphone technology over the years, this one is easily the most expensive (by many, many million) to do it.

28 Days Later Franchise

28 Years Later, in its iPhone glory, will be the third in the zombie movie trilogy which first started in 2002 with 28 Days Later. In that one, Cillian Murphy’s Jim wakes up in a London hospital only to realize the world is, well, worse.

A zombie apocalypse is happening (has happened) and he’s now simply trying to survive. The movie was tight, frenetic, and terrifying with these zombies doing something we really hadn’t seen before. Namely, run fast.

Cillian Murphy Returning

That movie was followed by 28 Weeks Later which took a decidedly different tone. This one focused more on curing the disease while containing the spread to just England. And while it focused on a core group of survivors, there was more of a militaristic vibe and a bigger budget.

28 Years Later, iPhones and all, has been kept under wraps but Cillian Murphy will return as Jim with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes joining the cast as well. Danny Boyle is, once again, directing and handled the script along with Alex Garland. The movie, in all of its iPhone 15 Pro Max glory is due in theaters on June 20, 2025.
