24 Movie In Development But There’s A Big Catch

By Jason Collins | Published

A movie adaptation of 24, an American action-drama television series that ran on Fox from 2001 to 2010, is currently in early development at 20th Century Studies. While this incited excitement among the series fandom, there’s a big catch—it’s still unsure whether Kiefer Sutherland would return to his role as a US counter-terrorist federal agent, Jack Bauer.

Hard to Imagine 24 Without Jack Bauer

To be entirely honest, it’s been a few years since we saw Kiefer Sutherland running around and yelling orders into a phone, all the while a relentless digital clock ticked down while dangers lurked from every corner and every exit of LA’s freeways. But it still remains uncertain whether or not we’ll see him doing the same stuff again in the upcoming 24 movie, and one of those reasons is simply because the movie is still in early development at 20th Century Studio, who declined to offer any comment on Sutherland’s involvement with the upcoming film.

24 Hours At A Desk Job

That also means that no plot details have been shared with the public; we do know that the upcoming 24 movie is going to adapt the events of the series, but it still remains to be seen to what degree that would be.

Kiefer Sutherland has previously commented that he would reprise his role in upcoming releases, though not as the lead this time, especially due to the physical toll involved in bringing Jack Bauer to the screens. The actor is turning 58 this year, and while a body double is always an option, perhaps it’s time for agent Jack Bauer to take a desk job.

Adapting The Early Seasons

Of course, any involvement in the 24 movie on Sutherland’s part is purely speculative until those involved with the project say otherwise, but considering that he was the lead of one of the best and most awarded television series, not including him in the project would be a complete waste.

As previously stated, the 24 movie is looking to adapt the entire series, which ran for nine seasons, with the first eight seasons airing between 2001 and 2010 and a single limited-event season that aired in 2014.

How Would 24 Work As A Movie?

Kiefer Sutherland portrayed Jack Bauer, whose usual missions mostly came down to running around LA and preventing various terrorist threats, such as nuclear explosions, from happening. Each of the series’ seasons depicts 24 hours in real-time, with each of 24 episodes depicting one hour of the previously mentioned 24.

Considering the format, we’re really curious as to how the upcoming 24 movie is going to adapt the series narrative without losing detail, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves with too much speculation.

Get Caught Up

Considering that the 24 movie is still at a really early stage, there’s virtually no information about a potential release window, let alone a release date. While we wait, those interested in revising the fantastic narrative of one of the most awarded TV shows ever—60 Emmy nominations, 20 wins—can catch up with the series on Hulu, which is conveniently bundled with a Disney+ subscription. Please note that you’ll need both active subscriptions to watch the show.
