1990s Sci-Fi Thriller Classic Getting High Tech Remake
Get your empty cardboard boxes ready because Metal Gear Solid might get a PS5 remake. While it’s still only a rumor at the moment, the idea that one of gaming’s undisputed classics might soon be accessible to a whole new generation is enough to have us screaming “Snaaaaaaake!” at our computer screens.
The original Metal Gear Solid might be over a quarter of a century old at this point—hold on, we just need to sign up for AARP real quick—but it’s still one of the coolest video games ever made.
The Metal Gear Solid remake is reportedly being developed specifically for the PS5 and won’t see a release on last-gen hardware.
This rumor comes hot on the heels of recent announcements that Konami is remaking several of its old classics for the current generation of gaming hardware. The list includes a remake of Silent Hill 2—considered by many to be the best game in the franchise—and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
The rumor also gives hope to those of us underwhelmed by the recent Metal Gear Master Collection. Vol. 1 release for the Nintendo Switch. Thirty fps for a 26-year-old game? Really Nintendo?
Metal Gear Solid is in the early stages of production—if it’s actually in production—as Konami is understandably focused on the Snake Eater remake at the moment. Once Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is finished, however, rumor has it that production on the OG Metal Gear remake will ramp up. If it sounds weird that Konami would remake Metal Gear Solid 3 before the first game, it’s really not.
While some aspects of the nearly thirty-year-old Metal Gear Solid may not hold up all these years later, the majority of the game should translate seamlessly to modern gaming platforms.
Snake Eater is actually a prequel to the other Metal Gear games, making it a logical entry point for what could possibly be a series of remakes based on the older games.
The Metal Gear Solid remake is reportedly being developed specifically for the PS5 and won’t see a release on last-gen hardware. That means those of you clinging for dear life to your PS4 might finally have to get with the times and upgrade your gaming console. As far as being a Playstation-exclusive title, that remains to be seen.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater will be available for PC and Xbox as well as Playstation when it comes out. Just for the sake of commerce, it would make sense for Konami to develop the rumored Metal Gear Solid remake as a multiplatform release, too. Especially given Konami’s apparent love of profit.
It’s no secret that the reason all of Konami’s big franchises like Metal Gear and Silent Hill, haven’t received new games in quite a while is because the company found that making pachinko machines was more lucrative. That’s right, gamers have to visit a Japanese casino if they want to experience the latest Castlevania release.
The original Metal Gear Solid might be over a quarter of a century old at this point, but it’s still one of the coolest video games ever made.
Luckily, these remakes seem to be proof that Konami is returning to what made them famous in the first place: video games.
While some aspects of the nearly thirty-year-old Metal Gear Solid may not hold up all these years later, the majority of the game should translate seamlessly to modern gaming platforms. We can assume that the remake will drop the original’s tank controls in favor of a more modern control scheme, and Snake’s cigarettes might be a problem, but otherwise, the game should be as fresh today as when it was originally released for the PS1.
