1990 Sci-Fi Action Blockbuster Sequel Gets Upgrade Fans Have Been Waiting For
RoboCop is one of the best action films of all time, and it didn’t quite recreate the magic in its first sequel, RoboCop 2. That said, it’s still a solid film and an essential addition to any fan’s collection for the franchise. Now, you can get the best possible version of the film with Shout Factory’s UHD/Blu-ray Collector’s Edition.
Peter Weller Returned For RoboCop 2
RoboCop 2 came out in 1990 and saw Irvin Kershner take over the director chair from Paul Verhoeven. Frank Miller and Walon Green wrote the screenplay, taking over for Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner, who wrote the first film. Peter Weller returned as the titular cyborg officer, while the rest of the cast was rounded out by Nancy Allen, Dan O’Herlihy, Belinda Bauer, Tom Noonan, and Gabriel Damon.
The War On Drugs
RoboCop 2 was the last film in which Weller played the role and the last film Kershner directed before his passing. The film saw RoboCop operating on the streets of dystopian Detroit, where he uncovers a conspiracy involving Omni Consumer Products to take over the city. He also has to deal with a gang of drug dealers and the drug they’re spreading on the streets called Nuke.
Never Reached The Heights Of The Original
RoboCop 2 wasn’t nearly as well-received as its predecessor, and it didn’t do as well at the box office either. The sequel grossed $45 million worldwide, which was $8 million less than the original’s take of $53 million. Of course, the original was also made on a much smaller budget, so the profits were lower, too.
But that doesn’t mean RoboCop 2 isn’t worth your time. While it lacked the originality and the sharp satirical edge of the original, the film still had sleek action and solid performances. If you’re a fan of the franchise overall, it’s a decent film and worth adding to your collection.
