Zoe Kravitz is finally responding to some of the hate she’s been receiving following her comments surrounding Will Smith’s physical assault on Chris Rock during this year’s Academy Awards ceremony. Like all the stars of Hollywood that night, Kravitz wanted to show off her dress when she posted a photo of herself on her social media pages and captioned it by writing, “here’s a picture of my dress at the show where we are apparently assaulting people on stage now.” The Batman star would go on to bring up the most talked about event of the night again when she later attended the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. While there, she posted another photo dressed to the nines, captioning it by writing “and here is a picture of my dress at the party after the award show – where we are apparently screaming profanities and assaulting people on stage now.”

While many agreed that Will Smith’s actions were beyond uncalled for, many also slammed Zoe Kravitz for her handling of the situation. During a recent chat with WSJ Magazine, the actress said, “It’s a scary time to have an opinion or to say the wrong thing or to make controversial art or statements or thoughts or anything,” alluding to her social media posts. She went on to say that what disturbed her the most was that, to her, the creation of art is centered around creating dialogue, something that she sees the internet being the “opposite” of. With both posts struck from her social media platforms, the actress is hoping to move on to express herself by creating more art and using fewer words.

In case you’ve been living under a rock and have no idea what we or Zoe Kravitz are talking about, let’s catch you up to speed. Back in March, millions tuned into their TV screens to find out what films would receive titles like Best Picture, Best Original Song, and Best Actress during the 2022 Academy Awards Ceremony. All was going as well as it could be, with hosts Regina Hall, Amy Schumer, and Wanda Sykes cracking up the audience and taking them through the festivities. However, things took a turn for the worse when comedian Chris Rock got on stage to reveal the winner of the year’s Best Documentary.

After doing a bit of crowd work that saw him roasting celebs including Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz, Rock turned his jokes to Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith. Making fun of Jada for her haircut, which the actress keeps short due to her battle with alopecia, Rock cracked a joke about her appearing in the next G.I. Jane film. Unamused, Jada simply rolled her eyes as her husband initially chuckled at the jest. Moments later, Zoe Kravitz, Oscars attendees, and those of us at home watched in shock as Will Smith strutted up onto the stage and quickly and harshly slapped Chris Rock before heading back to his seat and shouting obscenities at the presenter. To say everyone was stunned would be an understatement, but in the world of showbiz, the show must go on and that’s precisely what happened.

Following the insane occurrence, many celebrities including Zoe Kravitz voiced their concern for Will Smith and Chris Rock, and what the assault meant for the world of entertainment as a whole. All of the pushback eventually led Will Smith to make a public apology months after the event.
