Taylor Swift Named Honorary Mayor Of Tampa, Florida
Tampa, Florida, has made Taylor Swift honorary mayor of the city for a day to honor The Eras Tour.
Everyone is hyped up about Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour, in which the country/pop/rock/alternative/folk music superstar (and writer/director) will be playing songs from all the different eras of her impressive career. Whole cities are displaying that hype by trying to outdo each other with huge, welcoming gestures for the singer when she comes to their town. According to Consequence Sound, Tampa, Florida, might just win this one-upping competition because they just named Taylor Swift honorary mayor for the day.
Last month, the city of Glendale, Arizona, changed its name to “Swift City” when Taylor Swift arrived for the kickoff of the highly anticipated tour, and Arlington, Virginia, named a street after her (albeit temporarily). Las Vegas lit up its famous Gateway Arches just for her, but Tampa and its real mayor, Jane Castor, wanted to do even more.
“Here in Tampa, we’ve got a reputation to uphold,” she said in a video. “We want to go bigger. So I want to present you with a key to the city and invite you to be our honorary mayor for a day.” She even added: “Mayor Swift has a nice ring to it.”
Obviously, Taylor Swift probably won’t really do all the things that mayors and other governmental figures usually do, like deal with laws and take care of the city, but she will have a key to that city and make a great (symbolic) figurehead for the day.
The Eras Tour has already proven to be a massive hit among Taylor Swift fans, and it will be running through August 9. But Taylor Swift isn’t the only big music star audiences will see on stage: she will be joined by acts like Paramore, HAIM, MUNA, Phoebe Bridgers, beabadoobee, and others.
