Sydney Sweeney is looking sweet and sexy in a recent fan post that throws us back to the Pandora Jewelry Relaunch event in Los Angeles in 2019. The White Lotus actress poses in a white tube top with a thick fabric belt and matching shorts as she stands in front of an artfully graffitied wall. She also tosses her hair and gives a come-hither look to the camera in a short video filmed by her when she was in the car, most likely on her way to the event.
The Euphoria actress is no stranger to making waves, whether it’s for her style choices or her choice in film projects. Sydney Sweeney is in the headlines this week for her involvement in a remake of Barbarella, a science fiction film from 1968 starring Jane Fonda as a space traveler and ambassador for Earth who is sent out to find a scientist named Durand Durand (not to be confused with Duran Duran, the British rock band), who created a positronic ray that could potentially wipe out all of mankind.
Sydney Sweeney has already signed on to both star in and executive produce the remake, but Jane Fonda reportedly isn’t very happy about the idea. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she tries not to think about it. “Because I worry about what it’s going to be,” she clarifies. She said that she once submitted an idea for a remake herself when original producer Dino De Laurentiis was still alive that could have made it “a truly feminist movie,” but he wasn’t having it.
Now, Fonda worries that someone else could come up with an idea that may be less empowering to women, or that may stray too far from the intent of the original. Her opposition to the project doesn’t seem to be in regard to Sydney Sweeney, however, just the idea in general. There are some movies that don’t need a remake, and she feels that that is one of them.
We may all be putting the cart before the horse, though, because as of this writing, Sydney Sweeney’s Barbarella project currently has no director or writers attached. It is always possible that this film may never get made at all.
Unfortunately, Sydney Sweeney is also used to people not liking her choices – and being a lot meaner than Jane Fonda is being about it. In November 2022, GQ published an article in which the actress described how internet trolls would post screenshots of her nude scenes from Euphoria and tag her family members so that they could see them. It was highly upsetting to her because, in her words: “You have a character that goes through the scrutiny of being a sexualized person at school and then an audience that does the same thing.”
However, all the backlash and the trolling she receives for her choices in roles only makes her want to keep doing what she’s doing. “I’m an artist, I play characters. It makes me want to play characters that piss people off more,” she said.
That being said, Sydney Sweeney does sometimes still need an escape from all the haters, and she finds that escape in ceramics. She enjoys making pottery, especially for her dog, Tank. “I love to create a world,” she says, “even if it’s just for my dog.”
