Bathing suits are something of a specialty for Salma Hayek, although she does not always look quite as serene as she does in today’s post. For example, no less gorgeous, but definitely more freezing, you can see her here. And aside from bathing suits, she is also stunning in gowns and well, pretty much everything else. Check those out here.
Surprisingly, Salma Hayek did not start her career as a model. Though it is a common career track for many actors like Charlize Theron or Karen Gillan to work the runaway for some time and then transition to Hollywood, Hayek started as an actress in her native Mexico. She began her career in small roles in telenovelas, and at the age of 23 was selected to play the titular character in a popular series called Teresa. After achieving stardom in Mexico, she moved to Los Angeles in the early 1990s. Her English was limited at the time, and she spent some time in language courses and studying acting under the legendary instructor Stella Adler.
According to Salma Hayek, those first years in Hollywood were difficult. She was often told her strong accent and ethnicity were not right for mainstream roles, and would continue to perform in Mexico while searching for a breakthrough. That came when she started to work with director Robert Rodriguez. She first appeared in his Showtime thriller Roadracer, and then starred in Desperado with Antonio Banderas.
The 1995 low-budget film became a surprise hit and launched both Hayek and the director into the mainstream. A primary role as a seductive vampire mistress of a Mexican strip club in the cult horror film From Dusk Till Dawn made her a horror icon. Over the years, she has continued to work with Rodriguez and Banderas in films like Once Upon a Time in Mexico and Spy Kids 3-D.
Salma Hayek’s critical breakout film came in 2002, with Frida. Her portrayal of the legendary Mexican artist Frida Kahlo was universally acclaimed, and she became the first Mexican actor to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. This last year, she played a primary supporting role in Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci. She made even more news by revealing that she had filmed a sex scene with star Lady Gaga, which was ultimately cut from the finished movie. In 2021, she also starred in the MCU’s Eternals, which recently became the most viewed streaming debut for an MCU film on the Disney+ platform.
