Robert Downey Jr. is now known as one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood, helping to kickstart the financial juggernaut that is now known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Without Iron-Man, the MCU probably wouldn’t be the same today. It’s even possible it wouldn’t exist at all. But that wasn’t always the case. At one point, Hollywood wouldn’t hire Robert Downey, Jr, who battled addiction and public scandal. His redemption is possibly the greatest in all of Hollywood history. Thus, it’s understandable that RDJ might be empathetic toward other actors going through scandals of their own. According to Vanity Fair, that empathy has been extended to Armie Hammer, who RDJ has been reportedly helping through his crisis.

Last year, Armie Hammer faced horrifying allegations of emotional abuse, manipulation, violence, and sexual cannibalism. He was subsequently dropped from his talent agency WME. Currently, no charges have been filed against Hammer and he has denied all allegations against him. A source close to Armie Hammer told Vanity Fair that Robert Downey Jr. stepped in to encourage Hammer to go to rehab. They also indicated that Downey Jr. paid for nearly six months of rehab for Hammer at the Florida rehabilitation facility the Guest House.

Following Armie Hammer’s stint in rehab, TMZ and Variety reported that Hammer was working as a timeshare salesman in the Cayman Islands. Desus & Mero producer Muna Mire initially tweeted about seeing Hammer in a pamphlet for Morritt’s Resort after her parents vacationed in the Cayman Islands. The tweet quickly went viral before Mire deleted it. The press that Hammer received after this Tweet caused him to leave the Caymans. According to the source, Robert Downey Jr. provided Hammer with his Malibu home to stay in while also providing him with additional financial assistance while he tries to get back on his feet.

It’s unclear if Armie Hammer holds a future in Hollywood. While he hasn’t been charged with anything, the allegations against him are serious and may make studios wary to work with him. Still, it seems like there’s no better person to help someone through a public crisis in Hollywood than Robert Downey Jr., whose career resurgence has been incredible over the past 15 years. Robert Downey Jr. pulled in an incredible $75 million for Avengers: Endgame, finishing off his tenure in the MCU. His Sherlock Holmes series has also been highly successful, with a third movie in the series on the way.

While Robert Downey Jr. hasn’t really taken any roles since the beginning of the pandemic, with his last appearance being in 2020’s Dolittle, it looks like we’ll be getting some great projects from the start soon enough. In 2023, he’ll be starring in the next big Christopher Nolan film Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer tells the story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his work on the atomic bomb. In addition to RDJ, the film stars Cillian Murphy in the titular role, alongside Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Matt Damon, Kenneth Branaugh, Rami Malek, Olivia Thirlby, Dane DeHaan, Gary Oldman, Josh Hartnett, and more.
