The music world was shocked recently by the death of Rich Homie Quan, a talented rapper who was only 34 years old. As a platinum-selling artist, this Atlanta musician has been steadily gaining prominence over the years and seemingly had an entire life ahead of him to release more brilliant albums. But on Friday, Rich Homie Quan (real name Dequantes Devontay Lamar) passed away in an Atlanta hospital from a yet unknown cause, as confirmed by the Fulton County Medical Examiner.
The Breakout Year
Like many young artists, Rich Homie Quan had an unconventional path to success. His first studio album, Rich as in Spirit, landed #32 on the Billboard 200, solidifying him as a musician to watch out for in the coming years. But those who had closely followed his career know that it began years earlier with a variety of mixtapes culminating in the release of his 2013 breakout song “Type of Way.”
Type Of Way Kept Getting Bigger
2013 was a big year for Rich Homie Quan on several levels: in addition to that hit single, he began touring with Trinidad James and appeared on several songs on Gucci Mane’s album Trap House III, including “I Heard” and “Chasin’ Paper.” Later that year, he collaborated with YG, Young Jeezy, and 2 Chainz.
If that’s not impressive enough, by the end of the year, he released another successful mixtape (I Promise I Will Never Stop Going In), and the 2013 Michigan State Spartans football team adopted “Type of Way” as their anthem, prompting Rich Homie Quan to wear their jersey and support them from the sidelines during the Rose Bowl.
On The Furious 7 Soundtrack
After that meteoric year, Rich Homie Quan’s star continued to rise: he collaborated with Tyga, Wale, YG, and Kid Ink on “Ride Out,” a song later prominently featured in Vin Diesel’s Furious 7. He released another two mixtapes (If You Ever Think I Will Stop Goin’ In Ask Double R in 2015 and Back to the Basics in 2017. All of this culminated in the 2018 release of his hit studio album, followed in 2022 by the EP Family & Mula, and the artist’s many fans had every reason to expect we’d get more great songs from this talented young man.
Cause Of Death To Be Announced
As of this writing, an autopsy of Rich Homie Quan’s body is scheduled for September 6 in the hopes of figuring out the cause of his death. TMZ reports that when his girlfriend called the dispatcher, she reported that he was no longer breathing and that his heart had stopped beating. She also claimed that he began foaming at the mouth when she tried to move his body, but none of these details really tell anybody what the exact cause of death is.
An ATL Rap Legend
Regardless of the cause of death, we should all collectively mourn the passing of Rich Homie Quan, one of the most talented rappers in the South. He was also an innovator who, before he died, encouraged his fellow rappers to write less about murder and more about original subjects. With any luck, this legendary rapper will continue to influence the industry in death even as he continues to reach his legion of fans all around the world.
