The drama surrounding the Alec Baldwin-led Rust movie seems to amplify nearly every month, with the latest being the actor suing the crew of the movie so that he can clear his name of any wrongdoing in the tragic death of Halyna Hutchins. The bold move to bring forward a lawsuit of wrongdoing towards the crew could be a response to the police report of the tragedy now being made public. With the police report available for all to read, horrific details have emerged, like the multiple instances of misfires happening with guns from the head armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed.
Initially, the blame was placed squarely on the shoulders of Alec Baldwin in the Rust incident, who maintained his innocence throughout the investigation. However, with the police reports being made public, it seems that Hannah Gutierrez-Reed had been on set and handling two guns that had gone off without warning. One instance of misfiring involved a revolver that went off and struck the ground near Gutierrez-Reed’s foot.
Another instance was on the cabin set when another discharged gun went off without warning to the cast and crew. The announcement of the gun going off would have been under the responsibility of AD Dave Halls. Based on those two scary incidents, a total of six cameramen walked off set, with the head of the Camera Department, Lane Luper, writing a letter to production about the incidents. It appears that the gun that Alec Baldwin was handling on the set of Rust was the third of these misfirings.
When investigator T. Benavidez arrived on the scene during the shooting death in October, Gutierrez-Reed had been visibly upset with a gun in her hand, and the muzzle of the gun pointing down at the ground. Benavidez confiscated the fun from her, and she was placed in the back of a cop car, and later identified the other weapons used on the set that day, which were all confiscated as well. Another investigator named J. Cano approached Alec Baldwin on the set of Rust, where the actor reportedly stated, “I’ll do whatever you tell me to do.”
Ross Addigo was also a dolly grip on set that day, and distinctly remembers hearing Gutierrez-Reed telling Alec Baldwin that the gun he fired on the set of Rust was “clear.” This meant that the gun would not fire or dislodge any bullet or projectile. That is not what happened as a projectile was fired, killing Halyna Hutchins, and injuring director Joel Souza. Baldwin also stated that he was told that the gun was clear, which should remove any wrongdoing from being blamed on him.
These new details are horrible, and now it makes more sense as to why Alec Baldwin is suing the crew of Rust. His lawsuit mentions head armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed, AD Dave Halls, and rounds supplier Seth Kenney, which was filed on November 11th. So far, there have been no criminal actions brought against anyone on the set of Rust, though things could change in the coming weeks.
