Kevin Spacey has officially pleaded “not guilty” to the sexual assault charges that he is facing in the UK. The five counts that he is facing were read out to the actor while he attended the initial hearing at London’s historic Central Criminal Court, which is also known as Old Bailey. This was the first time that Spacey had formally plead “not guilty” to the charges that he is facing. The hearing was led by Justice Mark Wall, who also set the date for the trial, which is June 6th, 2023.
The trial for Kevin Spacey will take place at Old Bailey or at London’s Southwark Crown Court and has already been given a time frame of around 3 to 4 weeks. During the nearly year-long wait for the trial to commence, Spacey will be able to move freely, as he has been granted “unconditional bail.” That was set during a hearing on June 16th at the Westminsters Magistrates Court. Though the actor is facing some steep charges, his being able to move freely is likely because he is going to attempt to revive his film career in between the time he waits for his trial. He currently has three films that are set to release soon.
Reports have indicated that Kevin Spacey arrived at court in a suit and was confident about his responses to the media. During the hearing, while Justice Mark Wall was reading off the charges, he had apparently also smiled. Spacey has been charged with four counts of sexual assault by three men that have dated back to 2005. One count is also causing a person to engage in penetrative sex. The prosecutor in the case, Natalie Dawson, argued against allowing Spacey to have unconditional bail based on the severe charges that are being brought against the actor. However, Spacey’s lawyer Patrick Gibbs QC, also argued that Spacey had been as cooperative as possible. He claims that the actor went through hours of questioning by police and had shown up to every single hearing voluntarily.
Kevin Spacey has been dealing with strong allegations since he had been initially accused of sexual assault during the height of the #MeToo movement. His accuser is an actor named Anthony Rapp, who claimed that Spacey forced himself on top of him while both were attending a party. Rapp was only 14 years old when this had allegedly occurred. The trial for the allegations made by Rapp is set to start on October 4th. That could also be why Spacey has been given unconditional bail, as he is also due in court for another sexual assault allegation.
Kevin Spacey had initially stepped away from acting after the first charge had been brought against him. Well, he was fired from House of Cards during the reveal of the first charge. His last film role had been in 2018. Since then, these additional counts have been brought against the actor. Should be convicted of any one of the allegations made against him, it could mean that he is going to have to disappear for a lot longer this time.
