Johnny Depp’s $50 million defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard caused a lot of fans to turn against the latter. As with all the kinds of stories that seem specifically designed to promote rumor and speculation, the lawsuit caused old tales to resurface. In particular, there’s a story making the rounds that Kevin Costner called Heard out at a party for making sexual advances toward him while she was dating Depp.

Regardless of how you feel about Amber Heard, it might be a good idea to ask yourself exactly where the Kevin Costner story comes from and whether or not there’s any validity to it.

The story goes that in 2014, at a party connected to the release of the action thriller 3 Days to Kill, Kevin Costner turned to Amber Heard and said, “When you broke up with [Depp] for a day or two, though, it didn’t take you long to find your way into my trailer naked, though, did it?”

Usually the “moral” of the story when it’s imparted is that “good guy” Costner warned us all about Heard years ago but no one listened. Well, everyone’s favorite fact-finding/debunking website Snopes looked into the story, and in an article they published this week, they show that the story has more holes in it than Heard’s worst movie.

According to Snopes, the urban legend begins with a so-called “blind item” from the gossip/rumor blog Crazy Days and Nights. The 2014 story was labeled a blind item because at the time it didn’t mention any names. It only said that a “B list mostly movie actress” was sleeping with a married actor “who used to be a really big shot and is having a comeback year,” and that the married actor uttered the “naked in my trailer” insult at a party. Three years later in a “Blind Item Revealed” post, Crazy Days and Nights claimed they had been referring to Kevin Costner and Amber Heard.

As Snopes points out, not only is Crazy Days and Nights a gossip blog with a disclaimer letting readers know some of their content may not be factual, but they actually admit in that disclaimer that some of their stories are “fiction.”

Digging further, Snopes found that this was a second-hand story before it even arrived at Crazy Days and Nights, and there was no credible evidence that Kevin Costner actually said what he was quoted as saying. The site could find no sign of Heard and Depp’s relationship suffering an overabundance of friction at this point — a year before they were married — and in fact there were reports of a number of occasions around the release of 3 Days to Kill that the couple seemed particularly affectionate toward one another.

Could it have happened? Sure, it could’ve, but it doesn’t seem like there’s any way to prove it did. You could just as easily say Kevin Costner called out his 3 Days to Kill co-star for not recycling, or for liking the Star Wars prequels better than the originals, or for laughing at the mention of Waterworld. Any and/or all of those things could have happened, but there’s no proof they did, just as — unless we hear differently from Costner and/or Heard at some point — there’s no proof Costner said she showed up naked in his trailer.

Was Heard an unfaithful and abusive wife? Maybe. But there’s enough bad stories about her circulating now that spreading stuff like this just feels silly.
