Julian Sands Search Leads To A Shocking And Unexpected Discovery
A 75-year-old missing hiker named Jin Chung has been found while searching for actor Julian Sands.
The search for Julian Sands still has not located the missing Smallville actor, but, remarkably, found an entirely different missing California hiker. Per a report from NBC News, Los Angeles resident Jin Chung was found by the search party on Mount Baldy, suffering from weather-related injuries as well as one to his leg. The 75-year-old had been missing since Sunday, when he was separated from two fellow hikers and did not arrive at a planned rendezvous.
Julian Sands has been missing for approximately 12 days as of publication. The Leaving Las Vegas star was last known to be hiking at Mount San Antonio (more well-known as Mount Baldy due to being located near a village of the same name), reportedly taking the Baldy Bowl Trail. While there are numerous different routes, the Baldy Bowl Trail is known for being an aggressive, difficult trail; it is approximately 4.5 miles (one-way) and requires climbing over 3,400 feet to a height of nearly 10,000 feet.
San Bernardino County officials have warned that Mount Baldy is currently experiencing powerful winds and ice, which risk the safety of the still-missing Julian Sands and the search parties looking for him. According to the family of Julian Sands, teams are having extreme difficulty with the weather, which is also interfering with helicopters and drones attempting to use infrared technology to locate the actor. At this point, the winds around Mount Baldy are too powerful to use planes to aid the search.
Prior to going missing, Julian Sands spoke often about his love of mountain climbing. In a 2020 interview with Thrive Global, the Killing Fields actor described himself as weeping when arriving at the end of the trail and feeling that long mountain treks gave one a sense of losing ego and sense of self, allowing one to “become a vessel of energy in harmony hopefully with your environment.” According to Julian Sands, he had frequently hiked mountains around the world, including South America’s Andes Mountain Range and the mountains of Alaska and the rest of the United States.
While many are still holding out hope that Julian Sands will still be found in good health, his brother Nick Sands says he believes that the actor will not be recovered. Per CNN, Nick Sands said that “He has not yet been declared missing, presumed dead, but I know in my heart that he has gone” and “[w]hen in LA, the Mt Baldy mountain range was his favourite place, he would go there as often as he could.”
Julian Sands is best known for starring in the 1985 E.M. Forster adaptation A Room with a View alongside Helena Bonham Carter, Daniel Day-Lewis, Maggie Smith, Denholm Elliott, Judi Dench, and Simon Callow. He appeared in the WB teen drama Smallville as Jor-El, the Kryptonian father of Clark Kent; the role has been played by other luminaries such as Marlon Brando, Russell Crowe, and Terence Stamp.
