Julian Sands Body Discovered After Hiking Disappearance?
Human remains were recently discovered in the same area where Julian Sands disappeared months ago.
Hikers came across a body recently in the wilderness surrounding Mount Baldy. Could this be the remains of actor Julian Sands who disappeared somewhere in the vicinity of Mount Baldy earlier this year? According to Deadline, no name has been released in relation to the body, but authorities have promised that identification of the corpse should be completed by next week, with an updated press release to follow.
The announcement came from the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Office on Saturday. The official notice says that civilians hiking around the Mt. Baldy wilderness contacted the Fontana Sheriff’s Station after coming across human remains that may or may not be Warlock actor Julian Sands.
Fontana Station deputies alerted the Sheriff Department’s Emergency Operations Division, and together the two groups responded to the scene.
The remains were brought to the Coroner’s Office pending identification, which the sheriff’s office hopes to have completed soon. Those were all the details the sheriff’s office was willing to disclose in regard to the matter.
The discovery of the remains came just over a day after the family of Julian Sands issued what was their first statement regarding Julian’s disappearance. The family stated their deep gratitude to the search coordinators and teams that have worked hard trying to find Sands since his disappearance in January.
The search for the actor was temporarily suspended due to severe winter conditions still plaguing the western U.S. all the way into spring.
Efforts to locate Julian Sands started up again earlier this month, employing more than 80 search and rescue volunteers, as well as helicopters and drones. San Bernardino sheriffs claim they conducted eight searches to find the Smallville actor, as well as eight other operations, all to no avail.
Not surprising, considering as of last week, some parts of the wilderness on Mount Baldy were still buried under 10 feet of snow.
Mount Baldy is part of the San Gabriel Mountain range less than 50 miles northeast of Los Angeles. At over 11,000 feet high, Mount Baldy is considered one of the highest peaks in the region.
Despite its short distance from one of the USA’s largest cities, the area’s steep terrain and deep ravines make it difficult to navigate. Especially in the winter months, when Sands disappeared.
The 65-year-old British actor was an experienced hiker and had already climbed mountains in the Andes and the Swiss Alps at the time he decided to tackle Mount Baldy. Exactly what happened to Julian Sands during that fateful hike/climb is still unknown.
If the recently discovered corpse does turn out to be Sands, there’s a chance it could give authorities a better clue as to the circumstances surrounding the actor’s disappearance.
The North Hollywood actor is best known for his roles in films like Warlock and its sequel Warlock: The Armageddon, as well as Arachnophobia and Ocean’s Thirteen. Julian Sands was also an accomplished television actor with roles on Stargate SG-1, Law & Order, and Smallville, where he played Superman‘s father, Jor-El.
With any luck, the remains found by the hikers will be identified soon so fans and family can know one way or another whether Julian Sands is still missing or not.
