Jonathan Majors has been charged with several counts of misdemeanor harassment and assault after allegedly being involved in a domestic altercation with a woman in her 30s on March 25. The Marvel star was taken into custody after a 911 call was made from a Manhattan apartment. The Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania alum was arraigned and released on his own recognizance a day later.
According to People, Jonathan Majors was charged with three counts of third-degree assault, second-degree aggravated harassment, three counts of third-degree attempted assault, and harassment in the second degree. The charges come after the Manhattan district attorney’s office filed a complaint against the Creed III star.
Court documents state that he allegedly struck the woman “about the face with an open hand, causing substantial pain and a laceration behind her ear.” He also allegedly “put his hand on her neck, causing bruising and substantial pain.” The woman was taken to hospital for her injuries and has not yet been identified. Jonathan Majors’ next court appearance is scheduled for May 8th.
A representative for Jonathan Majors denied any wrongdoing by the actor and said they look forward to clearing his name. Following the arrest, defense attorney Priya Chaudhry released a statement maintaining her client’s innocence. She also suggested that “he is probably the victim of an altercation with a woman he knows.”
Chaudhry said, “We are quickly gathering and presenting evidence to the District Attorney with the expectation that all charges will be dropped imminently.” Jonathan Majors’ attorney said the evidence includes footage from the vehicle where the altercation took place, testimony from the driver, and eyewitness accounts from others.
Chaudhry also claims to have two written statements from the woman recanting the allegations. “All the evidence proves that [Jonathan] Majors is entirely innocent and did not assault her,” his lawyer continued. She also claimed that the unnamed woman was having an “emotional crisis,” which was the reason for her hospitalization.
“The NYPD is required to make an arrest in these situations, and this is the only reason [Jonathan] Majors was arrested. We expect these charges to be dropped soon,” Chaudhry continued. The charges against Jonathan Majors have already had consequences for his career.
His advertising campaign for the U.S. Army was pulled after his arrest.
The army’s enterprise marketing office said they were “deeply concerned by the allegations surrounding his arrest.” While Jonathan Majors is innocent until proven guilty, they decided to pause the campaign as a precautionary measure. “Prudence dictates that we pull our ads until the investigation into these allegations is complete,” Public Affairs Chief Laura DeFrancisco added.
Jonathan Majors has become one of Hollywood’s most sought-after stars, known for his roles in 2019′s The Last Black Man in San Francisco, The Harder They Fall, Lovecraft Country, and Devotion. He is set to star in the Sundance Film Festival entry Magazine Dreams and is also poised to lead the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Kang the Conqueror.
But the assault charges against him are severe and will significantly impact his career and reputation.
