It is no secret that Joe Rogan has some controversial opinions when it comes to all matters of life. His podcast remains the top listened-to podcast in the entire US, and he often brings on guests that tend to irk the general public. More often lately, Rogan has been bringing on doctor after doctor to discuss the ongoing controversies, facts, and conspiracy theories that keep the subject of COVID-19 as a top discussed subject in the world and on his podcast. Now, a team of doctors has banned together to make a plea to stop what they claim is “misinformation” that Rogan is consistently spreading on his podcast. The issue that sparked them into action was his recent guest, the controversial Dr. Robert Malone. They claim that Dr. Malone has allegedly been spreading “baseless conspiracy theories.”
A group of 270 scientists, doctors, professors, and healthcare workers have collectively written an open letter to Spotify, asking them to put more filters on the content they publish, especially with the spread of misinformation when it comes to the COVID-19 virus. They specifically cited the podcast of Joe Rogan. The world is certainly in turmoil and the ongoing pandemic has made things that much tenser. Political views and conspiracy theories have long been mixed with actual facts about how to handle this pandemic in a better way. Doctors have now become stressed with the mass amounts of content on the internet that consistently paints an invalid picture of how to combat the virus that has killed millions of people globally. While the open letter is to Spotify for their podcasts at large, the letter takes careful aim at Joe Rogan and the guests he has on his show.
One of the most controversial aspects of Dr. Malone’s words is his comparison of the virus protocols to events of the Holocaust. The open letter from the scientists addresses this issue. It states, “Dr. Malone is one of two recent JRE guests who has compared pandemic policies to the Holocaust. These actions are not only objectionable and offensive but also medically and culturally dangerous.” The comparisons of the virus and policies to protect the public in comparison to the Holocaust were likely always going to be controversial. It should be noted that it doesn’t appear that Joe Rogan is claiming these opinions as fact. However, the guests on his podcast are making statements, and painted as figures of authority when they share their views. This is beginning to worry those involved in attempting to teach the general public facts about the virus. The open letter aims to have Spotify be wary of the content which it is producing. Dr. Robert Malone has already been banned from Twitter for allegedly spreading misinformation, so the plea to Spotify is not without precedent.
It seems fair to say that things will remain tense as the controversy continues. Joe Rogan is likely to continue to bring on controversial figures to his podcast, and listeners can decide how they feel about medical professionals being brought on to discuss the pandemic. Rogan contracted COVID-19 in 2021 and stated that he used Ivermectin to treat it. That was controversial in nature as some doctors, and the FDA, have claimed that Ivermectin is dangerous for humans. Snopes however, says the drug was developed for humans and won a Nobel prize for its use on people (though they also confirm it was not developed for treating COVID). Meanwhile, Spotify is likely not to want to mess with its #1 podcast, but time will tell on what is going to happen.
