Fan Selling The Grossest, Weirdest Taylor Swift Memorabilia For $10,000
A fan is selling the contact lenses that watched Taylor Swift's Eras tour for $10,000.
A Taylor Swift fan made waves recently by creating an online listing attempting to sell the contact lenses through which they saw the star’s The Eras Tour for $10,000. She’s had a city (briefly) named for her and was named honorary mayor of Tampa for a day, but we doubt this is a symbol of devotion Swift ever would have imagined. Still, Bolde reports that a person, who likely paid a hefty sum just to see the show, thought selling their previously worn disposable eyewear might be a way to make some money back on the deal.
Taylor Swift tickets have, of course, been highly sought-after and the center of a huge scandal with online ticket merchant Ticketmaster, driving prices to unreal heights, so it at least makes sense that someone might try to sell some memorabilia from their experience. The idea that fans of the pop singer would pay serious money for such a bizarre prize, though, might seem a bit farfetched . . . until you read what they have to say about it. “I’d buy,” said one Swiftie, “I have no personality outside of being a Taylor fan.”
This seemed to be a grab for Taylor Swift’s attention, though, as the fan tagged her in the tweet saying they would roll around in broken glass at her command and begging for certain songs to be played at an upcoming show. One person quipped, “Swifties are so unhinged. I love us so much,” while another declared they would buy the lenses if they had the money. Others were less enthusiastic, expressing disgust, dismay, and general revulsion at the weird listing.
While Taylor Swift fans can certainly be extreme, we have our doubts that any of them would actually have paid $10,000 for a pair of used contact lenses. We’ll never get the chance to know for certain, though, as Depop has since deleted the listing, and the seller has claimed it was all a big joke anyway. Whether it was intended as a gag or not, these contact lenses can at least now reside in the annals of Internet history alongside the Virgin Mary grilled cheese, an Among Us chicken nugget, and Elvis‘ leftover water.
Whether Taylor Swift herself is aware of the sale listing, we can’t be sure, nor could anyone truly authenticate that the lenses were indeed used to view her concert, but someone with enough money might have eventually purchased them, if for no other reason than to make news. But on a tour where tickets have averaged as much as $1,700 and in a time where there will soon be zero gravity concerts, there’s not a lot we will believe isn’t possible. Fandom is a crazy thing and can inspire some serious—and silly—devotion, so we’d not want to underestimate its power.
We hope Taylor Swift fans would be reasonable about the whole thing, but weirder items have sold before. We would also hope people wouldn’t go rolling around in shards of glass, but one never can tell. In the meantime, we’ll stick to affordable concert tickets and craziness that is reserved for fan theories, not the purchase of incredibly expensive, bacteria-laden plastic.
