Firing Gina Carano Made Her The Most Popular Star In The World
Gina Carano, according to one metric, is now the most popular celebrity in the world taken from data over the course of the last week

Gina Carano had a, well, interesting few days last week. The actress’s will-they-won’t-they moment with the studio finally culminated. And then, almost immediately, she was picked up by another company and given a production and starring gig. So it seemed like the lowest of lows followed by the mediums of mediums (the new company isn’t Disney). But will all of this, considering nearly all publicity is *good* publicity, Carano did come out on the top of at least one list. It seems she’s landed herself on the top spot on IMDB’s Star Meter. So her “popularity” in this sense hasn’t taken a hit at all.
Gina Carano landing on the IMDB Star Meter is mostly a reflection of just how much she’s been in the news over the last week or so plus. The far-from-scientific data tool is meant to track what IMDB users are searching for and seeking out rather than the quality of talent within those searches. So, in this case, it makes sense that Carano would vault easily to the top of the list. She had a huge week in the news and that likely meant tons of folks seeking out more information about the actress. Following Carano on the list was Shalene Woodley (got engaged to Aaron Rodgers), Christopher Plummer (passed away) and Evan Peters (landed Ace Ventura remake).
But Gina Carano seeing her popularity rise was a little different than some of these others on the list. A little more than a week ago it was announced that she had been fired from her Cara Dune role on The Mandalorian and that Disney was severing their relationship and contract with the actress. This included all future Star Wars projects, of what there appears to be many. It stemmed from months of animosity between the actress, fans and the studio over her various social media posts which some found controversial.
Things came to a head when Gina Carano put out an Instagram post that compared the treatment of Jews during the Holocaust to the rhetoric around present day Republicans in the United States. Apparently Disney saw this as something of a tipping point and they fired Carano. This meant a termination of her contract.
But within the same day Gina Carano announced she’d entered a new contract with the Daily Wire, the conservative news and opinion outlet headed by Ben Shapiro. As part of their deal, Carano would be starring and producing an unnamed movie in the company’s effort to expand offerings to their subscriber base. Part of that initiative was putting out more movies and Carano was touted as now being one of the star faces of that plan.
So it’s easy to see why Gina Carano would top something like the IMDB Star Meter. Her name has been part of headlines for some time now and the nature of her news would make it so a broad base of folks (some fans, some not so much) would be seeking out information on the actress. We’ll see if her new gig with The Daily Wire lands her the same amount of publicity.
