Gina Carano Is Coming For Disney With A Vengeance
It’s been more than a month since former Mandalorian star Gina Carano filed a suit against Lucasfilm and Disney alleging wrongful termination and discrimination, and she is not backing down. Billionaire Elon Musk is even helping to fund Carano’s lawsuit.
Gina Carano was fired back in 2021, losing her role as Star Wars ranger Cara Dune after she shared social media posts comparing American politics to Nazi Germany. Her writings suggested having different political opinions is similar to being Jewish during the Holocaust.
Gina Carano Set Off A PR Disaster For Disney
Gina Carano was fired back in 2021, losing her role as Star Wars ranger Cara Dune after she shared social media posts comparing American politics to Nazi Germany. Her writings suggested having different political opinions is similar to being Jewish during the Holocaust.
Carano has also mocked those who put pronouns in their social media bios and shared posts about voter fraud pertaining to the 2020 election. In addition, she shared controversial tweets and Instagram posts on masking and COVID-19 vaccines. She is against both of those. Carano tells The Hollywood Reporter that she has given serious consideration to Donald Trump’s election claims but rejects the “election denier” label.
A Hollywood Pariah
Lucasfilm fired Gina Carano, and she tells The Hollywood Reporter that she learned the news, along with the rest of the world, through a statement issued by the company. Her agency, UTA, also dropped her, as did the Hollywood law firm Ziffren Brittenham.
Carano has since filed a suit against Lucasfilm and Disney in federal court in California, alleging wrongful termination and discrimination. Entertainment Weekly reports she’s also asking Lucasfilm to reinstate her role as Cara Dune.
The Money Of Elon Musk
It may seem a surprise name to pop up in all this, but Elon Musk is helping to fund Gina Carano’s lawsuit after he promised to support users of X (formerly Twitter) who claim to have faced discrimination for their social media posts. A spokesperson for X told Entertainment Weekly it is a sign of the company’s commitment to free speech.
Musk Has His Own Reasons To Go After Disney
Gina Carano tells The Hollywood Reporter she’s never directly communicated with Musk but calls him her guardian angel. She says he’s “using his money to fight massive injustice battles.” It should be noted here that Musk isn’t happy with Disney for other reasons, too. Back in 2023, Musk responded to a tweet that promoted an anti-semitic conspiracy theory, calling it the “actual truth.” This caused many companies, including Disney, to pull their advertising.
Carano Says She’s Canceled, But She’s Still Getting Work
Since the controversy and eventual firing, Gina Carano’s career has slowed down, but not everyone has turned her away. The right-wing media company The Daily Wire hired her to star in and produce a film called Terror on the Prairie, which debuted on the company’s website in 2022. She also recently signed with Straightwire Entertainment Group as her new management.
From MMA To Action Star
Gina Carano started her career as a mixed martial artist. Her popularity led to her being called the “face of women’s MMA.”Carano transitioned into films in 2011 with Steven Soderbergh’s action film Haywire. She then got the chance to be a part of the massively successful Fast & Furious franchise with Fast & Furious 6, and she was also the villainous Angel Dust in Deadpool.
In 2018, Gina Carano was cast in The Mandalorian, Lucasfilm’s first live-action Star Wars television series. She worked for two seasons before her firing in 2021.
