Game of Thrones Star Finalizes Divorce

By Chris Snellgrove | Published

When Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner and musician Joe Jonas got married in 2019, everyone thought that Sansa Stark was getting the kind of happily ever after in real life that was denied to her in the show. Sadly, Joe Jonas filed for divorce back in 2023, kicking off a firestorm of back-and-forth drama fiercer than anything Westeros ever had to offer. Now, Sophie Turner’s divorce from Jonas is finalized, bringing to a close one of the messiest celebrity splits in recent memory.

Moving On

In many bitter ways, Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner’s divorce has seemingly been full of more emotional highs and lows than the relationship itself. After going through mediation and ironing out some highly acrimonious child custody issues, the two have finalized everything and had a judge sign off on their paperwork. For both the fans who have been rooting for reconciliation and the ones who picked sides long ago, the end of this tumultuous marriage is an opportunity for closure and for moving on.

Of course, the two stars at the center of this romantic mess had already moved on before this paperwork made everything official. Sophie Turner began dating a British aristocrat named Peregrine Pearson after Joe Jonas filed for divorce. As for Jonas, he had a brief romantic attachment to actor Stormi Bree before getting more serious with another actor, Laila Abdallah.

Tried To Do Things Right

Part of what makes the relationship between Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas ending in divorce so tragic is that the two clearly worked on their relationship for a very long time. They began dating in 2016, and while they got engaged the next year, they didn’t officially tie the knot until 2019. In other words, they didn’t rush into anything and had years to get to know each other before getting married and having two children.

Turner Has Been Candid

After Joe Jonas hit Sophie Turner up with divorce papers, their relationship became turbulent in very short order: a few weeks later, she sued him to get their children returned to England, but they eventually reached a custody agreement. In May 2024, Turner gave an interview to British Vogue where she candidly discussed the “mom guilt” she felt about being separated from her children. She also spoke about her resentment against being referred to as one of the Jonas Brothers’ wives, though she emphasized this was an issue with the media rather than Joe himself.

The Divorce Drama Dragged On

Sophie Turner’s divorce drama has been going on for so long that many fans who had previously been very invested in the drama have already moved on. In this way, the rocky romance is a bit like the show that made Turner into a household name. As with Game of Thrones, this story of love and subsequent heartbreak was very captivating but ultimately ended with more of a fizzle than an explosion.

Miss Independent

If you’re a fan of Sophie Turner, don’t worry: the divorce has done nothing to slow down this prolific actor’s career. She currently has five different upcoming projects, including the long-awaited TV miniseries Joan that she was filming when Joe Jonas filed for divorce. And like Sansa Stark, we can’t wait to see how Turner thrives now that she is independent and can fully focus on her own ambitious goals.
