Wonder Woman might want to start using her bracelets and shield to fight off a new enemy. Cancel culture. That’s the case with Gal Gadot who’s run afoul of the internet mob in recent days. She weighed in on some world events involving her home country of Israel and they weren’t well-received by a number of people. According to We Got This Covered Gadot elected to eventually turn off the comments on a recent Twitter post that sparked more than a little outrage and even got a hashtag trending on the social media platform.
The controversy for Gal Gadot started on Wednesday when she took to Twitter to weigh in on the events happening in Israel right now. There has been considerable tension that led to violence in the country over the ongoing conflict between the country and its Palestinian residents. Without delving too far into the geopolitical mire here, Gadot came out on the side of Israel in the current conflict though does make a plea for peace in the message. Here’s what she had to say on the topic:
This message by Gal Gadot was seen by some as “okaying” the current rash of violence in the Gaza Strip as tensions mount between Israelis and Palestinians in the region. She also drew backlash for referring to Palestinians as “neighbors” rather than by name. The conflict has turned bloody and deadly this week with rocket attacks from both sides as well as violent clashes in the streets between the different groups. Some saw Gadot’s message as an outlet for the Israeli side of the conflict, effectively “okay-ing” the violence perpetrated by that country. I’m not sure this was the original intention, but a not-insignificant number of people saw it that way.
In addition to Gal Gadot turning off the comments to the post, it also sparked the hashtag #CancelGalGadot to begin trending on the platform. Reading through some of the posts on this hashtag and it doesn’t take long to see that the actress is being accused of fairly horrific messaging around the conflict. Some see it as a justification for the current use of force by the Israeli government and military. Whether it has the desired effect of actually having the actress canceled remains to be seen. But tensions are very high around the issue right now.
Gal Gadot was born in Israel and has strong ties to the nation. She’s weighed in on this conflict in the past as well, dating all the way back to 2014 when she came out in support of the Israeli Defense Forces around fighting at the time. This isn’t a new stance for the actress, though is one she’s receiving considerable consternation in the moment.
How this plays out for Gal Gadot remains to be seen. Based on her history and background, she’s unlikely to pivot or stance, and considering the original post is still up, there doesn’t appear to be any kind of apology coming. And we will see if this carries over to when her next movie, Red Notice hits screens sometime this year.
