Cancel culture has caught up to another actor, this one years and years after it was publicly known, and supposedly addressed. But that’s the case with Doctor Who actor John Barrowman who had a previously known incident drudged back up recently and is under fire for it again years later. And now, it looks like he’s being removed from further Doctor Who productions. According to Bounding Into Comics, Barrowman has been taken out of an upcoming Doctor Who live show and doesn’t look like he’ll be reprising his popular character anytime soon.
John Barrowman was set to appear in an upcoming live theatrical event called Doctor Who: Time Fracture. This is a play that is set to start shows at the end of May. The story is something of a prequel to the Doctor Who series and sets itself in the 1940s following the UNIT as they protect those from Earth from the issues of the time and space portal that had been opened. Barrowman wasn’t supposed to appear on the live show but rather had done a prerecorded spot that would show up as part of the act. The producers of the show have chosen to remove this from the production.
This wasn’t a coincidence to take John Barrowman out of the Doctor Who: Time Fracture production. It comes in light of the actor’s actions on the set of the show coming back into the public eye recently. Though the incidents aren’t necessarily breaking news on this front, they’d been reported and “dealt with” years ago, they are having ramifications in the here and now.
Immersive Everywhere, the company staging the production has even addressed Barrowman’s removal on their website. They have an extensive FAQ page about the show with everything from dress code, to timings, to ticket sales. But one of the questions on the page deals specifically with the actor. The question reads, “What’s happening with Captain Jack Harkness and Torchwood in the show?” Here’s their answer:
Immersive Everywhere have taken the decision to remove this pre record from Doctor Who: Time Fracture. We will continue to include content that pays tribute to this brilliant show that is Torchwood so as not to disappoint its fans, and are working on an exciting storyline to be announced soon.
All of this canceling of John Barrowman from Doctor Who productions stems from his reported behavior back on the show when it was revived in 2005. Barrowman played Captain Jack Harkness and would go on to become a major character in that series and then in the spin-off Torchwood. But is his on-set behavior came back to light when fellow cast member Noel Clarke was accused by numerous women of sexual abuse on that production and others.
John Barrowman was caught up in the wash of these allegations when the reporting also included his behavior on the set of Doctor Who and subsequently Torchwood. He was known to have repeatedly exposed himself to other cast members as part of what he called “pranks”. He’s admitted this behavior, apologized at the time, and again recently and there seemed to be a general consensus that it didn’t have ill intentions even if was completely out of line.
Apparently, when Doctor Who folks brought it up at the time and he was reprimanded, the behavior stopped immediately. But in light of the actions of Noel Clarke, there are now those who are relitigating the past behavior, leading to a canceling of Barrowman from the live event.
It’s unclear if this means the folks in charge of actual Doctor Who on-air productions would feel the same way about ever bringing Barrowman back, but it stands to reason they are distancing themselves from the actor as well. We already know other planned show events have been canceled. This could be the end of him in the franchise.
