Disney Star Reveals Secret Pregnancy And Why They Hid It
When it comes to celebrity pregnancies, fans usually hear about them pretty quickly and often are almost along for the ride with the parents awaiting the birth of the child. So it is rare to see a case like that of 23-year-old Disney star Halle Bailey, who did not say a word publicly about her impending start of being a mother until after she gave birth. She only shared the news in January, never saying a word beforehand. It turns out this was absolutely a deliberate choice on her end, one that she recently revealed she made to protect her new child.
Halle Bailey’s Pregnancy
Halle Bailey is still relatively young in her acting career, but evidently, she has already had enough public attention to learn to be guarded of her private life. So when it came to the start of her son Halo’s life in the world, Bailey wanted to guard his privacy as well and shield him from the thoughts of others. At the 2024 Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards on March 7, she articulated exactly why she did that.
“There was no way in hell I was going to share the biggest joy of my world with anyone,” Halle Bailey said. “Halo was my gift. He is the greatest blessing, and I had no obligation to expose him, me, or my family to that unyielding spotlight.”
Welcoming Her Son To The World
It was not until January 6 that Halle Bailey and her rapper boyfriend DDG shared the news of Halo with the world, posting a simple close-up picture on Instagram of her baby’s hand. DDG did actually post an ultrasound picture to his own Instagram in 2023, but as he posted it on April 1, many fans were convinced it was merely an April Fool’s joke. There had certainly been rumors that Bailey might be expecting, but the couple were otherwise quiet on the topic and left people to believe whatever they wanted.
The Little Mermaid
It is unlikely anyone would blame Halle Bailey for being cautious, as growing up in the public eye is difficult for any celebrity. She herself got to see that in the lead-up to the release of the live-action 2023 The Little Mermaid, in which she starred as Ariel. When the trailer for the movie was released, many spoke positively of her being cast in the role and were especially enthusiastic about a new generation of kids having the opportunity to see a black woman in such an iconic role.
The Public Backlash
However, not all feedback about Halle Bailey receiving the role of Ariel was positive. Especially early on, The Little Mermaid trailers were bombarded by people accusing Disney of trying to “go woke” by including more diversity in their casting. While such sentiments were the minority, they did still generate quite a lot of conversation that no doubt created challenges for Bailey to deal with in promoting the movie.
New Joy For Halle Bailey
In light of such experiences, it is very understandable why Halle Bailey would want to keep the joy of her new child private for a time. In her acceptance speech at the 2024 Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards, she said of the new addition to her life that he is “the biggest joy of my life, and that was becoming a mom to my perfect little angel, Halo.”
