DC A-List Superheroes Tell Fans How To Help Maui
Jason Momoa and Dwayne Johnson are living up to their superhero titles in current events. The Maui wildfires are devastating the region, and people are trying to figure out how to help. The DC superhero actors are stepping in to let fans know how they can rise to the occasion.
Dwayne Johnson, the star of Black Adam, took to social media to voice his concern. He laid bare his thoughts in an Instagram video post on Sunday.
For those seeking to donate, Dwyane Johnson recommends the nonprofit organization Hawaii Community Foundation.
In the video, Johnson stated, “I know that, by now, all of you around the world have seen the complete destruction and devastation that has hit our Hawaiian islands — our island of Maui — and I’m completely heartbroken over this and I know all of you are too.”
Like Jason Momoa, Dwayne Johnson outlined how best to help. For those seeking to donate, he recommended the nonprofit organization Hawaii Community Foundation.
Hawaii is a special place for Dwayne Johnson as he is of Samoan descent. With his mother being born in Hawaii, he had lived on the island for a time. Recognizing Hawaii as his home, Johnson continued to state that he’s been in contact with those on the ground in Maui.
In a written post for Instagram, Momoa stated, “Maui is not the place to have your vacation right now. Do not convince yourself that your presence is needed on an island that is suffering deeply.”
Jason Momoa, the star of Aquaman and the upcoming Aquaman sequel, also voiced his concerns. Momoa was born in Hawaii, and though he later moved to Iowa, he’d return to study at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu.
With a similar concern as Dwayne Johnson, as a native Hawaiian, Jason Momoa provided more cautionary information. Specifically, he outlined that tourists should avoid Maui as these wildfires are dealt with.
In a written post for Instagram, Momoa stated, “Maui is not the place to have your vacation right now. Do not convince yourself that your presence is needed on an island that is suffering deeply.”
Jason Momoa cited the importance of keeping tourists out as giving Maui a chance to heal. This is primarily because the hotels are being used as shelters for those being displaced by the destruction. More resources are needed to protect the residents, which is why cheaper flights have been helping get tourists out of the area.
The message from the DC actors is clear to all those not in Maui: Stay out, stay informed, and give to organizations currently on the ground.
Like Dwayne Johnson, Jason Momoa also voiced how heartbroken he was with the situation. He also shared photos from the Āina Momona organization of native Hawaiians, providing updates on the fires.
The Āina Momona posts that Momoa reposted reported how the fire had completely consumed Lahaina town. The posts also described how several residents fled to the ocean to escape the flames.
Much like Dwayne Johnson and Jason Momoa’s posts, Āina Momona also gave information on how to help. This included donations to the ActBlue Emergency Fundraiser for Maui Fire and the Hawai’i Community Foundation’s Maui Strong Fund. The Kāko’o Haleakalā organization devoted to preserving the environment of Hawaii was also cited as an Instagram account to follow (@kakoo_haleakala).
Based on reports from Maui County, as reported by CNN, the Maui wildfires have currently killed at least 55 people. Over 1,300 people were displaced by the wildfire consuming their homes.
The chaos of the wildfires has been widely reported on and brought out many voices of concern. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Momoa added their authentic voices to the situation and are helping to spread the word on how everybody can do their part.
