In August 2024, two foods from Costco ended up recalled. The company is asking anyone who bought the two products–Kodiak Power Waffles and Rock River Cattle Co. Smokey Hibachi Seasoned Beef Skirt Steak–to return them to their nearest Costco store for a full refund. These Costco recalls have not yet caused any health problems with people who have used them, but it’s still recommended no one eats either product and returns them immediately.

The first of Costco’s recalls was for Kodiak Power Waffles. Specifically, the batch went to parts of the Midwest in the United States. The product was a 40-count box and had the UPC 705599019203, the lot code 24193-WL4, and the time stamp 12:00-23:00. Specifically, they were the Buttermilk & Vanilla Power Waffles to be sold before January 10, 2026, and were first available in stores around July 15, 2024. As for what caused the recall, it’s possible some of the packages have bits of thin plastic in the ingredients.

The easiest way to get a refund on this Costco recall is to take the container back to the store, preferably with a receipt. However, if you have questions about the contamination, it’s also possible to contact Kodiak directly.

Steaks In The Southwest Have Also Been Recalled

The second of the Costco recalls was for skirt steak, specifically from the Rock River Cattle Co. Smokey Hibachi Seasoned Beef Skirt Steak. This product was sold in the Southwest.

While this Costco recall didn’t have any contaminants, it does contain soy, wheat, and sesame, none of which were listed on the packaging These are all severe allergens that could pose a serious health issues to anyone sensitive to these allergens. There are no specific codes, but it applies to the products meant to be sold before September 13, 2024.

Costco Will Be Issuing Refunds

Because of this, if you don’t want a refund, or you already ate the product, the majority of people don’t need to worry. This is one of those Costco recalls that only affects a certain group, namely anyone with the above allergens. If those ingredients don’t affect you, you’re more than safe to eat them.

Again, for this Costco recall, the best option is to return the product to the store and get a full refund. However, if there are any questions, they should be directed to the American Foods Group.

Not A Costco Issue, But Rather A Supplier Issue

It’s worth mentioning that while these are Costco recalls, they aren’t the group responsible for the problem. They’re willing to refund anyone who has purchased them, but they have no way of knowing which products they get are not made properly. Instead, that’s up to the main producers, such as Kodiak and American Foods Group, to determine and announce.

The Reason For Food Recalls

Food recalls are nothing new. While they aren’t terribly common, there are a fair number that occur every year. In 2023, there were 313 recalls of food in 2023 alone.

Undeclared allergens, such as in this round of Costco recalls, are the most common, accounting for over half of all recalls.

After that, listeria, salmonella, E. coli, Hepatitis A, lead, foreign matter, and a lack of inspection are other common problems. The Costco recall involving Kodiak waffles falls under the foreign matter category, because of the accidental addition of inedible plastics.
