Campbell’s Soup Company Changes Name After Over A Century
For more than 100 years, Campbell’s Soup’s iconic logo has been a staple on the grocery store shelves and in the pantries of American families for multiple generations. However, the food company recently decided on a name change that will take the focus of its branding away from its original offerings. They will now open it up to cover the multiple types of food products. At their September 2024 Investor Day event, the company brass announced that “The Campbell Soup Company” would be henceforth named “The Campbell Company.”
The Campbell Company
The decision was made because the brand sells so much more than just the soups. The company produces a wide variety of non-soup items in the food and beverage category that include Cape Cod Chips, Pepperidge Farm, Prego, Pace, V8, Noosa, and a host of others.
The recent acquisition of Sovos Brands in the summer of 2023 for $2.7 billion added an entire line of other food products to its growing list, including the popular pasta sauce Rao’s Homemade.
Since 1869
Campbell’s Soups has been in operation since 1869, when it was founded by Abraham Anderson and Joseph Campbell.
Anderson brought his expertise as a commercial canner and packer to the fledgling business while Campell hailed from the wholesale fruit and vegetable business.
Their company was officially branded as “Anderson and Campell” until 1922, when it changed its name and branding to the “Campbell Soup Company.”
New Strategy And Mission
The Investor Day event was meant to announce Campell’s Soup’s new brand name and share with interested parties the company’s vision for the future, which includes a new strategy and mission.
Campell’s Soup chief executive officer and president Mark Clouse spoke to those in attendance at the September meeting about the changes that the company has undergone over the last five years, highlighting the new additions to the brand’s ever-growing lineup of food and beverage items.
He referred to the recent era under his tenure as a “transformative journey” that makes a new brand name and new mission necessary for continued growth and successes.
Shareholders Need To Approve
The “Campbell’s Soup” name change isn’t quite official, however. The company still needs to present the proposed new moniker to shareholders at the next shareholder meeting this November. At that time, an official vote will be taken to approve the name change.
With cooler temperatures in the immediate future, consumers will no doubt be adding broths and hearty soups to their shopping carts. For fans of the Campbell’s Soups varieties, this announcement might cause a bit of confusion when they begin to peruse the aisles of their favorite grocery store for the timeless brand.
But with the name Campell’s still in the mix, consumers should find this brand marketing transition fairly easy to navigate.
Still Campbell’s
A representative for the company noted that the brand will still be referred to in its current simplistic form as “Campbell’s.” “We will always love soup and will never take our eye off this critical business. But today we are so much more than soup.”
