Riverdale Camila Mendes has the exact kind of enormous social media presence you would expect from a CW star of her charisma and talent, currently boasting nearly 27 million followers on Instagram. Fortunately for all of them, she uses this enormous following to promote the upcoming seventh and final season of the Archie Comics reimagining by posting a picture of herself in a sheer black negligee and high heels. There is also a piano involved but it is doubtful that will be the focus of attention for many viewers.
The caption to Camila Mendes’ post reads “march 29. see you then stud, ms. lodge awaits you,” referencing both the Riverdale season 7 premiere date and her character, the wealthy heiress/occasional crime lord Veronica Lodge. Many of her famous friends chimed in at the comment section, with Lili Reinhart (who plays Betty Cooper on the show) saying “Choose me, Miss Lodge!!” and actress Christina Grasso referring to her as a femme fatale, complete with a knife emoji.
Grasso also has an excellent eye. Camila Mendes has been positioned as the bad girl archetype of Riverdale since it began, and this post certainly shows why. In addition to her sheer negligee, Camila Mendes is wearing matching boy-cut underwear and a bar, while her black hair is cut with classic rockabilly bangs a la Bettie Page. It is a look so dramatic and striking that few could pull it off, but the Riverdale star seems to have no issues doing so.
The seventh season of Riverdale is reported to be taking an abrupt turn from the previous story, which is saying something. So far, the CW show has involved Camila Mendes ruthlessly taking over her father Hiram’s (Mark Consuelos) criminal empire, multiple different serial killers, Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) leading a quasi-fascistic vigilante gang, Betty Cooper becoming something called the Gryphon Queen, and a flashback episode in which the whole gang plays a Dokken song that originated in 1987’s A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.
Also, thanks to some supernatural forces (courtesy of Kiernan Shipka’s Sabrina Spellman), Camila Mendes and all the rest are now in a parallel universe where it appears to be sometime in the 1950s. One has to give the show credit: it is certainly going out with a bang.
Most recently Camila Mendes starred in the Netflix sleeper hit Do Revenge with Maya Hawke and Sarah Michelle Gellar. The film was directed and co-written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who was recently tapped by Sony Pictures for a revival of the 1990s slasher series I Know What You Did Last Summer (which also co-starred Sarah Michelle Gellar). It seems possible that Camila Mendes could transition over to the reboot of the series, which is trying to make the same leap back into the public consciousness as the recent update of the Scream franchise.
However, until then, we are content to follow Camila Mendes’ Instagram account and see just how weird Riverdale season 7 will get.
