Britney Spears Speaks Out About Cops Showing Up At Her House
Britney Spears stated she felt "gaslit" and "bullied" because her fans called the cops to see if she was ok.
Britney Spears took to Twitter yesterday to express her frustration with fans who called the police on her. As reported by Variety, the world-famous pop star deactivated her Instagram account recently after posting a cryptic video where she danced around and claimed to have changed her name to “River Red.” Her fans called the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office to see if she was ok, but the incident made Spears feel like she was being “gaslit” and “bullied” by overzealous fans who refused to respect her privacy.
According to Spears, the police only got as far as the singer’s front gate before realizing there was no danger and quickly left. The entire ordeal led to Spears addressing her fans and stating that she needs privacy.
The “Toxic” singer expressed concern that the visit from authorities would lead to her once again being portrayed by the media in a harsh light. Spears famously fought for years to end an involuntary conservatorship imposed upon her by her own father. For 13 years, Britney’s career and assets were in someone else’s hands until she finally won her freedom in 2021.
Spears was put under conservatorship after a series of public incidents raised concerns about her mental state. The incidents included Britney losing custody of her two children and shaving her head completely bald. Fan reactions included the viral “Leave Britney Alone” video that was mocked and parodied countless times online.
Now that Spears finally has her life back, it’s understandable that the pop star would be leery of having events like the cops showing up at her home popping up on every media outlet imaginable. What concerns Britney the most, however, is her fans. The very people who fought for an end to Spears’ conservatorship could be the ones who land her right back in it.
Spears made sure to let her fans know how much she loves and adores them but pleaded with them to respect her privacy — something many fans who grew up alongside Spears might find difficult.
The 41-year-old superstar has been in the public eye for over three decades, starting with a role on the Disney Channel’s ’90s The Mickey Mouse Club revival before becoming one of the biggest celebrities in the world following her breakout hits “Hit Me Baby, One More Time” and “Oops, I Did It Again.” In all that time, every aspect of Britney Spears’ life has been poured over by rabid fans, leading some to consider Spears more than just a celebrity but family.
While that kind of connection with fans is something many stars dream about, it’s often a double-edged sword leading to stalkers and, in the case of some celebrities like former Beatle John Lennon, even worse.
Luckily, Britney’s obsessive fans were only concerned with her safety … this time. Who knows what might happen the next time fans overreact to something Britney does online? For the sake of everybody’s favorite pop star, the best thing fans and media outlets can do is follow the advice of the famous video: leave Britney alone.
