For years, Angelina Jolie has proven her commitment to humanitarian causes like human rights and stopping violence against women. Now, the Oscar-winning actress is in the absolutely last place most would choose to be — Ukraine. Jolie was spotted a few times in the country over the weekend, and a few enterprising fans posted videos of the star.

Over the weekend, People reported that Angelina Jolie was in Lviv, Ukraine in her role as Special Envoy to the U.N. On Saturday, she was spotted in a cafe in Lviv where she was recorded signing an autograph for one cafe patron and waving to the recorder before moving to wait in line. You can see that video below.

That was only one of a number of moments caught by onlookers. In another video recorded in Lviv, Angelina Jolie takes the time to seemingly comfort an elderly man by holding his hand. You can see that video below.

On the same day, Ukrainian Railways caught a shot of Angelina Jolie in a crowd of people waiting to welcome arriving refugees. The displaced Ukrainians were being evacuated from the city of Pokrovsk. You can see that photo below.

Angelina Jolie was appointed Special Envoy for the UNHCR — the United Nations’ refugee agency — in 2012. Her role is to advocate for the displaced in crises like the current Russian-Ukraine War. People reports that while in Lviv, Jolie — along with welcoming the displaced Ukrainians — visited children injured in a horrific bombing that killed 50 civilians.

A quick trip to the official Angelina Jolie Instagram account is indicative of how dedicated the actress is to global causes. Unlike plenty of other celebrities who use their social media presence for self-promotion — not to mention the usual run-of-the-mill meme-sharing purposes many of take part in — Jolie’s Instagram is reserved for pretty much nothing but advocacy.

Celebrity reaction to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has run the gamut from advocacy to lunacy and everything in between. On one end of the spectrum are Angelina Jolie and Arnold Schwarzenegger, the latter of whom made himself a target of Russian propagandists after posting a video to Russian social media sites in which he told Russians they were being lied to by their government. On the other end is Gina Carano who suggested the war is the result of a conspiracy by the United States governemnt, and likewise Steven Seagal — whose expertise in international affairs was apparently culled while pretending to kick people in some of the worst movies ever created — placed the blame on a vague, nameless “entity” setting the two countries against one another. Then there’s billionaire Elon Musk who challenged Vladimir Putin to a fistfight to decide the war, because of course he did.

Like many of us, celebrities are largely powerless in the face of the Russian-Ukraine War, but it doesn’t stop them from trying. People reports Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star Benedict Cumberbatch has opened his home to refugees who have escaped Ukraine. “I want to give them some stability after the turmoil that they’ve experienced, and that’s within my home,” Cumberbatch said.
