Amber Heard first met Johnny Depp on the set of The Rum Diary back in 2009. Following several protection orders, a divorce, and a failed lawsuit against The Sun, the Pirates of the Caribbean star filed a defamation suit against his ex-wife. This time his case refers to a 2018 op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post. In the article, the Aquaman star said she was a victim of domestic violence. She also discussed what being a public figure representing domestic abuse felt like in a world where women are vilified for doing so.
Warning: Explicit content follows that is not suitable for sensitive readers. Although Amber Heard does not mention him by name, Johnny Depp says she implied that he was her abuser. And that accusation has damaged his reputation. Now, shocking new allegations have been made about Depp during the opening arguments of the $50 million trial. According to Rolling Stone, Ms. Heard’s attorney Elaine Bredehoft claimed that Depp sexually assaulted his former wife using a liquor bottle during a black-out drunk episode.
The horrific instance of the alleged abuse took place in Australia in 2016. Bredehoft said Depp took between eight and ten ecstasy pills, ripped off Amber Heard’s nightgown, and dragged her across the floor while punching and kicking her. “Then he penetrates her with a liquor bottle. That’s the Johnny Depp you’re going to hear about in this case,” the attorney told jurors via Vulture. Despite the mountains of evidence against him, the actor has repeatedly denied physically assaulting Amber Heard during their four-year relationship.
And his legal team backed that up in court saying Heard had never made that accusation before – noting that it was not part of her 2016 abuse allegations. Camille Vasquez went a step further, calling the allegation a flat-out lie of convenience. “In Mr. Depp’s fifty-eight years, not a single woman has ever accused him of violence, and nobody in Hollywood or the world had any reason to believe he was an abuser. Until Ms. Heard publicly accused him,” she told the court.
At the end of court proceedings, a spokesperson for Johnny Depp reiterated to CBR that they allege the claims from Amber Heard are false. And that they say the accusations conveniently surfaced after she was sued for defamation. The Fantastic Beasts actor’s representative also said the horrific allegation followed a pattern of her elaborate, erroneous claims which have continued to change and evolve with time. Heard is accused of doing this for the purpose of Hollywood shock value and to exploit a serious social movement.
Besides making headlines for years, Amber Heard and Johnny Depp’s turbulent relationship has reportedly cost the actor work in Hollywood. Warner Bros even asked him to leave the Fantastic Beasts franchise. The situation has also spawned various petitions from fans. This includes one to bring Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and another to remove Heard from Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The former has garnered over 650,000 signatures while the latter is almost at the two million mark. Movie executives have not made any official decisions at this time.
