Marvel Star’s Surprising Regrets About His Memorable Villain
Jude Law seems to be one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood…he has had an absolute slew of roles, and to his credit, he seems to make each one very distinct from the ones that came before. For example, he played a surprise villain in the hit film Captain Marvel. Jude Law is proud of the Marvel villain he brought to life, but he does have some regrets, saying in a recent Variety interview, “I wish I’d been allowed to have a bit more fun with the part.”
Before expressing those regrets, Jude Law expressed how much he enjoyed playing the villainous Yon-Rogg, saying “That, for me, was the height of Marvel.” Regarding the studio, he noted that “I don’t think there was much more they could get” out of his mentor-turned-heel character. Nonetheless, he “wanted to lean into the humor more,” and he went on to elaborate on how he wished he could have played the character differently and just how uncomfortable his goofy costume really was.
While Jude Law emphasized that Captain Marvel “was a really good experience,” he went on to describe exactly how he thought his character could have been portrayed with a bit more humor. “I wanted him to be more arch,” he said. That makes sense, really, as the Yon-Rogg we saw onscreen seemed to have exactly two gears: stern mentor and screaming jerk.
Beyond the changes Jude Law wanted to make to his Captain Marvel character, he also had a complaint shared by many MCU stars: namely, that the costumes they have to wear are profoundly uncomfortable. “Those suits are hard to move in because they’re thick rubber,” he said. His futuristic uniform would have likely been uncomfortable no matter what, but he went on to describe how the discomfort was heightened by his stunt training.
“You go to stunt camp for a couple of months, where you’re doing all these fight rehearsals and learning to do all this stuff,” he said. As soon as Jude Law put on his Marvel character’s duds, however, he realized that the thick rubber costume hindered his flexibility: “I can’t touch my toes!” Before shooting, this left him with a troubling question: “how am I going to do all that stuff with this thing on?”
Jude Law’s struggles with his Marvel costume had an ultimately happy ending: “you figure it out,” he said. It’s tough to deny that he learned his way around this rubber suit quite well, leading to some very memorable fight scenes in Captain Marvel. While he returned via flashbacks in The Marvels, the sheer discomfort of the costume might explain why we haven’t seen future appearances of Yon-Rogg. Should Law decide to return yet again, though, his character could make for a fun wildcard as the MCU continues to explore its cosmic boundaries.
While we really enjoyed the film, Jude Law’s complaints about his Captain Marvel character seem perfectly valid…other bad guys like Loki and Agatha have proven that MCU villains can be menacing while still being very funny. Of course, given the historic failure of The Marvels, the odds of his character coming back to the big screen seem lower than ever before. With a rumored Marvel reboot around the corner, though, it’s always possible that the return of Law’s memorably misogynistic heel is closer than any of us realize.
