Dune Prophecy Trailer is Out: Here’s What We Know So Far

By Becca Lewis | Published

The Dune: Prophecy trailer is out, and it covers the rise of the Bene Gesserit sect that is featured prominently in the Dune movies. The prequel series on MAX was previously titled Dune: Sisterhood and it is set long before the birth of Paul Muad’dib Atreides. Dialing back the clock 10,000 years, Dune: Prophecy is a tension-soaked vision of the Dune universe.

Because Dune’s context is a far-flung universe, with a range of alien races and characters at play, there’s ample material for movies and television. The upcoming prequel, Dune: Prophecy, draws much of its inspiration from the book Sisterhood of Dune, hence the original name. The sequel series, in an era where all advanced technology has been destroyed, centers on the responsibility that goes along with power, and the constant tendency for that power to overwhelm those who wield it.

The coven that becomes central to the imperial powers of the Dune universe is an enemy that Desmond Hart (Travi Fimell) tries to warn the Emperor about to no avail. The central conflict of Dune: Prophecy hinges on the desire of some in the cosmos to thwart the Bene Gesserit’s bid for imperial power. With the entire future of all the houses built on the struggles of the one sisterhood, the pressure on them is immense.

The Cast

Directed by Anna Foerster (Outlander), John Cameron (Severance), and Richard J. Lewis (Westworld), Dune: Prophecy will star Emily Watson as Valya Harkonnen, Olivia Williams as Tula Harkonnen, and Travis Fimmel as Desmond Hart. The cast also includes Johdi May as Empress Natalya, Mark Strong as Emperor Javicco Corinno, and Sarah-Sofie Boussnina as Princess Ynez. The series is an HBO original, co-executive produced by Alison Schapker and Diane Ademu-John who developed the story into the series.

Dune: Prophecy

The original novel that the series is based on, written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, called Sisterhood of Dune is set 10,000 years before the events of the movie that we’re familiar with. Dune: Prophecy delves into the origins of the sisterhood that holds the reins of the various houses of empire in the Dune universe.

The TV series has a lot to fill us in on as a prequel set 10,000 years in the past, but fans are hungry for more from the franchise following the success of the 2021 Dune movie.

The very long-term goal of the sisterhood in Dune: Prophecy seems to be to engineer the birth of Paul Atreides through the intermarriage of various noble families, but it’s not clear if more of the thread from the popular Dune movies will be picked up by the TV series or not. Since the time elapsed between Dune: Prophecy and the section of the Dune universe that covers the birth of Muad’dib, there are a lot of directions the series could go, including morphing into other series and spinoffs if it’s successful.

Release Date

The upcoming series is made by Cunning Hand, HBO MAX, and Legendary Television, and was filmed in Budapest, Hungary. Dune: Prophecy will premiere on MAX on November 17, 2024, but no information is available yet as to other streaming options.
