Battlestar Galactica Creator Brings New Video Game Series To Streaming

Ronald D. Moore has signed on to the Amazon/Sony TV series, God of War as a writer, executive producer, and showrunner following the exit of the series’ producer team led by Rafe Judkins. The series is based on the wildly popular Playstation game of the same name from Santa Monica Studios. The  Greek and Norse-based franchise includes seven games along with the TV series, following the same central character, Kratos.

Ronald D. Moore Joins God Of War

After a four-year hiatus from Sony, Ronald D. Moore returned in June, with God of War being his first big project since. Previously, he spearheaded Outlander and For All Mankind for Sony, both popular series with an expanding audience. His departure from Sony in 2020 was sparked by a deal with Disney’s 20th Television, beginning with an adaptation of Swiss Family Robinson, but Sony drew him back into their fold earlier this year.

With the show’s previous executive producers, Rafe Judkins, Hawk Ostby, and Mark Fergus, leaving several completed scripts on the table, Ronald D. Moore represents a shift in artistic direction for the God of War TV series.

The move by Sony execs signals that the series is changing gears, adding new writers, and tapping a new talent pool following delays. While Cory Barlog, the creative director of Santa Monica studios, is sticking with the series as an executive producer alongside Playstation’s  Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, the executive production team and writers room are getting reworked.

Moore Has Experience

While the fantasy realm might not be in keeping with Ronald D. Moore’s earlier experience as a writer and producer that included a long-running stint on Star Trek: The Next Generation and a producer role on Battlestar Galactica, his more recent work on Outlander is more in keeping with the fantasy elements in God of War. Moore’s overall experience with worldbuilding, from HBO’s Carnivale to Syfy’s Helix is a good indication that he’s well-suited for a fantasy video game adaptation.

Everything We Know About The God Of War Series

While the TV series is based on the Playstation game of the same name, Ronald D. Moore will be writing for a more evolved Kratos, who has realized that his plot for revenge isn’t as important as his family, and sets out on a new quest in God of War the TV series.

The series brings new gods, new challenges, and a more developed set of characters to the franchise, although fans of the game can expect to see a few of their favorite characters as well. Following the narrative of the game, the TV series will be a continuation of the story of Kratos, rather than an adaptation of the previously told story.

With writing for the project redirected, there’s no release date or cast information for the live-action adaptation yet from Sony or Hulu. Since they’re relaunching from zero, despite originally ordering the series in 2022, Ronald D. Moore will likely need a little time to catch up on things before scheduling the God of War premiere date. However, with the wild popularity of the game, and continued interest from fans despite delays, the project does seem to be finally moving forward.
