R&B’s Hottest Modern Star Makes Feature Debut In Hilarious Throwback Comedy
Those who grew up on classic comedy movies such as Half Baked, How High, or Ice Cube’s Friday trilogy may be feeling the void in the modern cinematic landscape, as straightforward buddy comedies simply don’t seem to be as popular as they used to be. Luckily, the trailer for one exciting new throwback comedy has just dropped on YouTube, sending audiences into a frenzy. The film, which stars Keke Palmer and rap/R&B vocalist SZA in the leading roles, is titled One Of Them Days, and is on pace for a theatrical release in January 2025.
Keke Palmer And SZA Star In One Of Them Days
The front-and-center sight of SZA in a movie trailer immediately caught my eye when the first look at One Of Them Days dropped, as I’ve been a fan of her music for many years. Even if you haven’t sat back and shed tears to her full-length albums Z, Ctrl, or SOS, you’ve likely heard the Grammy Award-winning singer’s voice on numerous chart-topping tracks with Kendrick Lamar, Doja Cat, and Summer Walker.
Needless to say, I was instantly sold by the time my eyes darted to the other side of the screen and saw legendary screen actor Keke Palmer.
Once I was finished hyperventilating at the thought of waiting another six plus months for SZA to drop her long-awaited Lana album, I hit play on Sony Pictures’ One Of Them Days trailer, only to become even more enthralled at the throwback style of film.
The Plot
Per the trailer, One Of Them Days will center on SZA and Palmers’ Alyssa and Dreux, as they struggle to make enough money to pay their rent in a single afternoon. Along the way, the duo is set to encounter numerous hijinks, including a botched blood drive, a few electrical fires, and a pay-day loan scam, as prophesied by the incomparable Katt Williams, who appears to be playing a well-meaning homeless financial advisor.
Connecting To The Friday Franchise?
Many fans have already theorized that Katt Williams‘ involvement in the film may be one of the most important puzzle pieces, as it directly connects One Of Them Days to the cast of the Friday franchise. While it seems unlikely that Williams is playing the same character he once brought to the screen over two decades ago with Money Mike, you can’t deny the inherent similarities in his hilarious performance, as laid out by the trailer.
Others have expressed jubilance at the fact that SZA and Keke Palmer don’t appear to be touting One Of Them Days as a direct remake or sequel to any of the classic films it pays homage to, and are instead embodying brand new characters in a franchise that could very well span multiple sequels if successful.
Personally, I would be completely hooked by this cast, this premise, or this trailer alone. Combined, it looks like One Of Them Days has a major recipe for success. The project, which is set to be SZA’s feature film debut, will appear exclusively in theaters on January 24, for those interested in checking it out.
One Of Them Days also touts behind-the-scenes credits from producer Issa Rae, writer Syreeta Singleton, and director Lawrence Lamont, each of whom has a wealth of experience bringing hip-hop-inspired stories to life on projects such as Max’s Rap Sh!t.
