New R-Rated Horror Flick Slashes Up HBO Top 10

By Britta DeVore | Published

She’s always threatened to kill her way to the top and now MaXXXine is doing exactly that as the Mia Goth-led feature has crushed the competition to land in the number one spot on HBO Max’s Top 10. Right now, audiences can head to the streamer where the final installment of Ti West’s horror film series comes to an epic conclusion. With a stacked cast, a killer storyline, and ‘80s vibes, there’s nothing not to love about this fun, thrilling romp.

MaXXXine Closes Out The Trilogy

MaXXXine serves as a follow-up to 2022’s X, which also just so happens to be available right now on HBO Max. The third cinematic chapter of Ti West’s trilogy follows aspiring actress Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) after the horrific events that went down back on the farm in the previous film. After leaving her trauma in the dust – literally – Maxine has sped off to Hollywood where she now has a job as an adult film star.

But Maxine’s drive to become a starlet doesn’t stop there as her hard work, determination, and persistence eventually pay off and she lands a role in a campy horror flick. There’s just one problem – the people she loves are being stalked and brutally murdered by a mysterious killer who seems to be drawing a direct line to Maxine.

An ode to one of the grimiest decades in Los Angeles’ history, MaXXXine is a fun watch that keeps you guessing until the credits roll and the HBO Max main menu comes back on.

Before you head over to watch MaXXXine on HBO Max, it’s worth noting that many fans of the trilogy’s other two titles, Pearl and X, found themselves a bit thrown off by the pacing and overall storyline of the latest arrival. The starkest difference is that while the other two movies lean into the slasher aspect, MaXXXine plays out more like a whodunit thriller with some intensely gruesome and brutal kills along the way.

The Cast

Still, MaXXXine is well worth checking out while it’s on HBO Max, as, along with Mia Goth reprising the titular role, the movie is overflowing with famous faces and top-tier talent. Included in the lineup are names like Kevin Bacon (Footloose), Bobby Cannavale (The Watcher), Elizabeth Debicki (The Crown), Michelle Monaghan (The Family Plan), Lily Collins (Emily in Paris), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), pop superstar Halsey, and more.

The journey of MaXXXine to the number one position on HBO Max’s Top 10 started back in 2022 with the release of X. That movie introduced the primary protagonist, Mia Goth’s Maxine Minx, a young woman working on low-budget adult films who dreamt of a bigger and much more lavish life in the film industry. As the events of X unfold, audiences watch as the group that Maxine is with on her latest shoot get murdered one by one while filming at a rental located on a farm.

The farm in question is owned by Pearl (Mia Goth) and Howard (Stephen Ure) who end up being absolute maniacs. With the original film such a massive success, Ti West released the franchise’s second movie, Pearl, which served as a prequel story about the titular fame-obsessed psychopath who we previously met in X. As of right now, only X and MaXXXine are available on HBO Max so to get the full picture, you’ll need to turn elsewhere.
