The Office Is Invading A Hit Video Game Series
Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is coming to Funko Fusion, the Funko Pop! video game that launched in September. Characters from The Office will be available as part of a new DLC pack arriving this year, though the studio remains tight-lipped as to who made the cut. Fans of the smash hit comedy are already hoping that Prison Mike will be making an appearance.
The Office Joins Other Major Franchises
Funko Fusion is a co-op action game, similar to the LEGO games, with players taking control of the hero, Freddy Funko, alongside dozens of stars from other famous franchises. The Office may sound like a strange addition, but Jim, Pam, Mike, Dwight, and whoever makes the cut will be joining characters from Battlestar Galactica, Back to the Future, The Walking Dead, Xena, The Thing, and Jurassic World among many others. Since you can find a Funko Pop! of nearly everything, it makes sense the game would be a strange mashup of properties that would otherwise have nothing to do with one another.
The Office Has Had A Few Games
This isn’t the first time that The Office cast will be part of a video game. Back in 2007, a Diner Dash-style game was released for PC, while two years ago, The Office: Somehow We Manage was released for mobile devices. An idle Tycoon game, it was immediately review-bombed by fans of the series upset over the free-to-play mechanics. Now it’s up to Funko Fusion to try and break the curse and give fans a good representation of their favorite workplace sitcom in video game form.
One Of The Biggest Shows Of All Time
The Office slowly worked its way into pop culture, with its 2005 debut season considered to be underwhelming, before exploding in Season 2 once the American series broke free of the storylines from the British version. From then on, the series was a juggernaut of cringe comedy, with fans desperate to follow the romance of Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam (Jenna Fischer), the character growth of Michael (Steve Carell), and whichever side character caught their attention.
Given the love for the series and the extensive cast of side characters, it would seem like a perfect fit for a Tycoon or management-style game, but nothing has caught on in the nearly 20 years since it started airing.
A Reboot Is In The Works
Outside of The Office arriving in Funko Fusion, the series today is a staple on streaming, frequently entering the top ten on Peacock. A reboot, set in a newspaper, has been in the works for a few years with frustratingly little information reaching fans. With no stars attached and no release date, all that’s known is that it’s going directly to Peacock.
No Release Date Yet For The DLC
It’s a bold move for the Funko Fusion to bring in The Office as one of its first pieces of major post-launch content. It might pay off, as the thought of using Dwight alongside Doc Brown and Xena sounds like it could be fun. Keep your eyes peeled on digital storefronts for when the new DLC pack is released, and then you’ll be able to, hopefully, add to the legend of Recyclops.
