Deadpool & Wolverine Nearly Killed Fan-Favorite Character
One of the most memorable moments of Deadpool & Wolverine was the bait-and-switch regarding the title character’s deaths…it looks like each is destined to die in the film’s climax, sacrificing their lives to stop the reality-destroying Time Ripper. They are then revealed to have survived the process by essentially sharing the burden of the energy coursing through them, and their healing factors help make each character whole. However, this scene was nearly very different: via Instagram, Ryan Reynolds revealed that Colossus was destined to die in the original draft of the film.
Colossus Was Supposed To Die At The End
The reason that this gentle giant was originally going to die is simple: originally, neither Reynolds nor the studio thought they would be able to secure Hugh Jackman for Deadpool & Wolverine. However, Reynolds confirmed that he already had much of the film mapped out in his head, including the use of the “Like a Prayer” song for the film’s climax.
“Before Wolverine entered the chat, it was largely gonna be the same motion-control sequence I’d been dreaming about, except my dance partner was originally COLOSSUS,” he wrote, noting how the latter “would have died in the preceding scene, launching Deadpool into a state of pure rage and revenge.”
With Reynold’s typically off-kilter humor, he discussed how Jackman’s involvement with Deadpool & Wolverine effectively saved Wade Wilson’s longtime friend. “Obviously, Hugh joining changed the destiny for everyone,” he said. “And Colossus, along with his virginity, stayed intact.”
Colossus Was Heavily Featured In The Deadpool Films
It’s interesting to ponder how audiences would have reacted to that character’s death in the original Deadpool & Wolverine script. Before Wolverine, Colossus was the most prominent member of the X-Men in these films, one who often tried to be a walking, talking conscience for Deadpool himself. Such a long-time, fan-favorite character dying would have been a very buzzworthy moment, but it would have dampened the otherwise triumphant tone of the film’s climax.
Should Colossus Have Died?
However, such a sacrifice might have fixed Deadpool & Wolverine’s most persistent narrative problem: namely, that the title characters can shrug off any damage and are nearly unstoppable throughout the film. Because of this, the huge showdown with all of the different Deadpool Variants feels very empty because there are no real stakes…we’re just watching a CGI-drenched battle in which unkillable heroes cut through unkillable foes. Had a popular character like Colossus been killed, it could have cemented the grim fact that all bets were off and that nobody was safe.

With that being said, we’re still happy that Deadpool & Wolverine pulled off its killer climax without killing Colossus (a move which would have made comic nerds everywhere cry out “bohze moi!”).
Keeping the character alive means we may yet see more of him in future Deadpool movies, and there’s always a chance that this character (or some Variant of him) could join the X-Men once they join the MCU. Considering the strong rumors that Marvel will be rebooting its popular cinematic universe after Secret Wars, anything is possible when it comes to this character’s future.
Deadpool & Wolverine Saved Marvel And Colossus
While he is no stranger to sharing (and sometimes oversharing) movie details on social media, we’re grateful that Ryan Reynolds filled us in on this weird bit of Deadpool & Wolverine. As it turns out, Hugh Jackman’s return to the role of Wolverine did more than save Marvel…it also saved Colossus from a particularly grim fate. And that might have forced all of us older fans to do the unthinkable: to begin screaming his old power-up noise from the X-Men arcade game in both grief and solidarity.
