For years now, Ryan Reynolds’ name has been associated with The Merc with the Mouth, Marvel’s Deadpool. While the actor typically sticks to the sillier side of things, in 2005 he picked up an ax and went a little crazy in a remake of the classic horror flick, The Amityville Horror. Now, interested parties can head over to Max to check out Reynolds’ most unhinged performance as the title is now streaming.
A Reboot Of The Original
Serving as a reboot of the 1979 film of the same name, which is itself based on Jay Anson’s novel of the same name, The Amityville Horror follows a family as they move into a too-good-to-be-true home on Long Island, New York. The Lutz’s have seemingly landed the property of their dreams—a Dutch Colonial-style house with plenty of backyard space for the kids to play—and all in their price range!
But, as it would appear from the outside, things are a bit too good to be true as, after the Lutzes move in, they soon begin to experience bizarre occurrences. Eventually, these supernatural happenings are tied to a six-person murder that happened on the grounds before the Lutzes took over the residency. However, by the time the family realizes what’s happening, it might be too late for George Lutz (Ryan Reynolds), and that’s when the pace of The Amityville Horror really picks up.
Critics Hated It, Fans Saw It In Droves
Along with Ryan Reynolds in the leading role as the family patriarch, George Lutz, the movie also featured performances from Melissa George (30 Days of Night), Philip Baker Hall (Boogie Nights), and Chloë Grace Moretz (Carrie) in what served as the latter’s feature-length debut. Despite being hit with mixed reviews from critics, including a bleak 24 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie drummed up enough interest to bring audiences into cinemas. By the time its run came to an end, The Amityville Horror earned more than $107 million against its $19 million budget.
Based On A Real Case
The Amityville Horror falls under that lovely umbrella of being both a piece for horror lovers as well as true crime fans. The story behind the supposed haunting all started in 1974 when a young man named Ronald DeFeo Jr. killed his entire family – shooting them dead in their beds. Throughout the years following his imprisonment, the man changed his story about what truly happened, with many folks grasping onto the paranormal aspect that perhaps DeFeo was possessed by a demon.
The Real Event Has Ties To The Conjuring
The story behind The Amityville Horror also includes two other very famous names from the world of hauntings as Ed and Lorraine Warren were the chief paranormal investigators who assisted the Lutz family during their darkest hour. Of course, we now know so many of the Warren’s cases through the Conjuring franchise which has brought their lives to the big screen for over a decade.

Although we may never get to the bottom of what went down with the DeFeo family all those decades ago, there sure have been some particularly spooky stories to come from it.
