Will Smith Reunites With Controversial Blockbuster Director

By Becca Lewis | Published

The pair that brought us the Bad Boys franchise 20 years ago are contemplating a reunion to make Fast and Loose, a Netflix action film. Will Smith, who recently delivered a starring performance in Bad Boys: Ride or Die is set to star in Fast and Loose, and Micheal Bay, widely known for his work on Transformers and for making repeated sexist remarks is in talks to direct. This would be the first time the two have teamed up since 2003, with Smith set as a star and producer on the crime-spy thriller.

Will Smith And Michael Bay Reunite For Fast And Loose

Will Smith will play a guy with amnesia, who figures out that he’s been working on both sides of the law, and Michael Bay will be brought on as director to help tell the story of how the CIA agent/crime boss figures out what’s been going on prior to his amnesia.

Things aren’t quite the way they seem for John Riley, played by Will Smith, and he has to tease out the details of his complicated double life. If his past work is any indication, we can expect lots of explosions and an adolescent approach to sexuality from the main characters with Michael Bay as the director.

Will Smith Producing

The movie will be produced by Will Smith as well as having him in the starring role, but Michael Bay isn’t listed as a producer on the project at this time. Chris Bremmer, Erich Hoeber, John Hoeber, and Eric Pearson wrote the screenplay for Netflix.

Reuniting With Bad Boys Writers

Writers of the project will also be reuniting with Will Smith and Michael Bay, as Chris Bremner was also a writer on Bad Boys For Life and Bad Boys: Ride or Die with Will Smith, the Hoeber Brothers both worked on Transformers, Rise of the Beast with Michael Bay, and Eric Pearson worked as a writer on Transformers One with Bay.

Smith And Bay Through The Years

Although Will Smith and Michael Bay had talked about working together again after the Bad Boys 2 release, their careers diverged for the last 20 years. Bay was mainly absorbed with the Transformers franchise as well as picking up a few installments of The Purge. Smith continued with the Bad Boys franchise, and won an Oscar for his performance as Richard Williams in King Richard while pursuing projects like Emancipation and Women of the Movement.

The two have developed a wide variety of talents since they last worked as a team, although Bay’s career has also been dogged by accusations that he doesn’t know how to develop three-dimensional female characters and the lack of maturity of his male protagonists.

Upcoming Projects

Both Will Smith and Michael Bay have multiple irons in the fire and have other projects forthcoming. Smith has a role in the upcoming movie Resistor, based on the Daniel Suarez bestselling novel Influx, and he has several projects in production, including a comedy special and a remake of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.

Bay is currently in talks with Adam Goodman, the former president of Paramount Pictures to develop the Skibidi Toilet meme for TV and Film and is working on a G.I. Joe/Transformers crossover.
