Jennifer Lopez Excited About Breakup With Ben Affleck

That may sound cold, but Jennifer Lopez didn’t mean it as a slight against Ben Affleck. She clarified to Glaser that the reason for her excitement is that she is looking forward to facing the future as a way to effectively test her mettle. Turning introspective, she said, “Yes, I’m not looking for anybody, because everything that I’ve done over the past 25, 30 years, being in these different challenging situations, what can I f***ing do when it’s just me flying on my own…what if I’m just free?”

While Jennifer Lopez doesn’t sound overly acrimonious about Ben Affleck or her impending divorce, she did sound a bit defensive when it came to the prospect of being newly single. What originally set her off in the interview was her desire to set the record straight regarding her desire to fly solo. She noted how people tell her “you’re just on your own,” and she wanted to clarify just how liberating being on her own could truly be.

Reading between the lines a bit, it sounds like Jennifer Lopez doesn’t want to be defined by who she is dating but rather by her own accomplishments. Affleck is set to be the star’s fourth divorce, with the one before this being Marc Jacobs, the man with whom she raised two twins together before they divorced in 2014. Speaking of big names, she was previously engaged to baseball star Alex Rodriguez, and she didn’t get back together with Affleck until she and the shortstop called it quits.

Considering how Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck getting back together felt like a fairy tale ending (after all, this was a love story that stretched back more than two decades), their relationship crashing and burning again has many fans wondering what happened between the two of them. Suge Knight has put forth the explosive theory that Affleck saw footage of Lopez with disgraced musician Diddy from when she and the Bad Boy Records mogul were dating and that this made Affleck want to call it quits on their relationship. 

There is always a much simpler theory, albeit one that doesn’t connect to anybody’s current scandals. It’s entirely possible that history repeated itself and that the two people who couldn’t make it work over 20 years ago just couldn’t make it work in the here and now. Only time will tell if we learn what truly drove the formerly happy couple apart or even if they will inexplicably get back together yet again (hey, stranger things have happened).

We’d still love to see this couple make their happily ever after work, but that now seems less likely than ever before. Jennifer Lopez seems ready and willing to move on, and while he’s less effusive about it, the same seems to be true for Ben Affleck. We can only wish these two star-crossed…er, stars the very best and embrace gratitude that a sequel to Gigli (which had such scintillating dialogue as “it’s turkey time…gobble gobble) is now just as unlikely as a reconciliation between these two.
