Best New Anime This Decade Returns For A Second Season

The official Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End X account posted that the show has been renewed as the official announcement. That announcement came a few months after the first season ended, though the show’s popularity made its renewal unsurprising. The barebones announcement didn’t include a release date, leaving fans guessing about when they’ll get more of the show. 

One detail the announcement did include was that season 2 of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End will be produced by Madhouse, the studio that made the first season. With the show staying at the same animation house, there’s a good chance the talent behind the first season will continue to work on the popular show. That includes industry veterans like director Keiichirō Saitō, script supervisor Tomohiro Suzuki, character designer Reiko Nagasawa, and composer Evan Call. 

With Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End sticking with Madhouse for its second season, it will likely continue to be available in the West through Crunchyroll. The streaming service provided both the original Japanese and English dubbed versions of the show’s first season. That will likely be the case for the second season, which will help to keep the show’s international fans satisfied. 

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End follows the title character, an elven wizard who helped defeat the Demon King and bring about peace. While there are flashbacks to that heroic quest, the show is set after that victory, exploring the implications of the protagonist’s immortality. She sets out on a new adventure centered around grappling with the mortality of her former companions, forming a new party as she does. 

The original manga version of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End was a huge hit, creating an established fan base for the anime to build off of. Selling millions of copies, the manga was popular with both readers and critics, making numerous best-of lists in Japan and The United States. It has also won numerous awards in Japan and was recently nominated for Best Manga at the Harvey Awards. 

The anime adaptation of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has continued that success, picking up popular support and accolades of its own. Like the manga, the first season was both popular and received praise from critics. It’s also already racking up award wins and nominations in both Best Anime categories and technical awards for voice acting, music, and animation. 

We may not know when the next season of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is coming, but it’s always reassuring to know a show has officially been renewed. The fact that it’s sticking with the same production company is also a huge relief for fans, as switching studios can often result in delays and drops in quality. Whenever the next season comes out, its fans will be eagerly waiting.
