Freddie Prinze Jr. has been tapped to reprise his role as Ray Bronson in the new I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel film in the works at Sony. The original 1997 movie follows what happens to a group of teens who try to cover up a tragic accident only to have their past literally come back to haunt them.

The film was based on a novel by the same name, Lois Duncan, although many details were changed in the adaptation.

Freddie Prinze Jr. could be joined by Jennifer Love Hewitt. She was also in negotiations to reappear in the new sequel as of the project’s inception in 2023.

While it’s not a done deal that the two will get to be co-stars again in the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel film, the news that Prinze Jr. has signed onto the project is an auspicious sign. The film is set to be released in July of 2025, so we can keep our fingers crossed for an on-screen reunion.

Reuniting With Jennifer Love Hewitt

Although Freddie Prinze Jr. could be reunited with former co-star Jennifer Love Hewitt on screen for the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel film, his other co-star and wife Sarah Michelle Gellar says she won’t be joining him.

She said simply that she’s “dead” when asked why she wouldn’t be participating in the project. Her character was killed by the stalker’s hook near the end of the 1997 film, so it’s not a huge surprise that she won’t be returning.

Few Details

Details of the plot for the new I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel film are scarce. Director Kaytin Robinson shared on X that the new sequel will build on the 1998 sequel, which the original cast left off.

That makes the return of Freddie Prinze Jr. essential, especially since we’re not yet sure whether or not we’ll see Jennifer Love Hewitt. Making the new I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel film a follow-up to the 1998 installment means that the subsequent sequels likely won’t play a part in this sequel’s plot.

The Original Franchise

The original version of I Know What You Did Last Summer had a first sequel titled I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, released in 1998 and was followed in 2006 by what is considered to be a standalone 3rd Sequel.

In 2021, the franchise was revived as a TV series, also missing its entire original cast.

Freddie Prinze Jr. will get to make an appearance in the new I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel film as he did in the last one, making the TV series the only one in the franchise in which he didn’t appear.

A Friendly Crowd

The latest installment will also include Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Haur-King in the cast.

The latest I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel film will be directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. She just happens to be good friends with Sarah Michelle Gellar, one of the original movie’s stars, and wife to Freddie Prinze Jr.

Neal Moritz, who produced the previous installments of the franchise, will produce the feature for Sony Pictures, to be released July 18, 2025.
