The Yellowstone Scene That Disgusted Kevin Costner
Fans of Yellowstone and Kevin Costner know that the 69-year-old actor is a lot like his character on the show. And apparently, that goes for what foods gross them out. In one episode of the popular series, Dutton shares his detest when the family chef serves octopus, and apparently, Costner’s reaction in the scene was genuine.
Kevin Costner’s Line Was Ad-Libbed
In the Season 2 episode “The Reek of Desperation,” the Dutton family’s in-house chef, Gator, serves grilled octopus for dinner. In the scene, John Dutton reacts to the meal, asking the Chef, “Gator, what the f*** is that,” with a rather disgusted face. According to the real-life chef who portrays Gator, the line was Kevin Costner’s ad-libbed reaction, as Costner really didn’t expect what was being served.
Gator Is The Real Deal
Gabriel Guilbeau is very familiar with what he calls Kevin Costner’s picky eating habits. Not only does Guilbeau portray a chef in Yellowstone, but he also serves as the production cook, feeding the entire cast and crew. Even before serving food and acting in the popular drama series, Guilbeau served as Taylor Sheridan’s head of craft services for the previous projects.
You can even purchase Guilbeau’s Official Dutton Ranch Cookbook, with many of the same recipes the chef served the ranchers in the dining room.
Kevin Costner’s Favorite Foods
Guilbeau dished on Kevin Costner’s eating habits in an interview with Delish. Describing his finicky palette, the Yellowstone cook quipped “before he [Kevin Costner] met me, I think he solely lived off of canned chili and hot dogs.”
Just as John Dutton is an all-American type of man, so apparently is Kevin Costner-especially when it comes to his favorite foods. Guilbeau also revealed that the Dances with Wolves actor has quite the sweet tooth. Costner often asks the Yellowstone cook to make him an apple pie.
That is, right after he tells Guilbeau that he’s going on a sugarless diet, of course.
No More Octopus For John Dutton
Luckily, Kevin Costner won’t have to be faced with any more of Chef Gator’s less-than-desirable plates on Yellowstone. The star exited the series after failing to re-negotiate his contract and a highly-publicized dispute with series creator Taylor Sheridan. According to Costner, the departure stems from scheduling conflicts due to the series filming at the same time he was scheduled to work on his Horizon film series.
The End Of Yellowstone?
Even without the Dutton patriarch, the show must go on. Yellowstone will return with all new episodes of Season 5, Part 2. The first half of Season 5 aired way back in November 2022, and unfortunately, fans will have to wait a bit longer as we still don’t have a release date for the remainder of the series.
In 2023, Paramount confirmed that Yellowstone would end with Season 5. However, more recent reports suggesting that Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser will stay on for a sixth season have made some question whether or not the studio has changed its mind. Regardless of what happens with the future of Yellowstone, one thing’s for sure: we won’t be seeing Kevin Costner react to any more food that doesn’t come from one of his cows.
