The Ark Season 3: What Is Happening With This Syfy Series

By Doug Norrie | Published

These days, it can be tough to fully buy in or commit to a television series, especially one on streaming. That’s because you just can’t be 100% sure it will all pay off in the end. With cancellations seemingly around every corner, we live in a weird day and age for content. And it’s been something that is worrying to fans of The Ark, especially in terms of Season 3. Is this Syfy series still on track for another set of episodes? It’s not so clear.

The Ark On Syfy

As of this writing, The Ark Season 3 appears in relative limbo. The good news is that the show hasn’t been outright canceled. The bad news is that it hasn’t been confirmed either. What Syfy plans for The Ark isn’t known, nor do we know what is holding up the decision.

From a timing point of view, it isn’t all that strange for The Ark Season 3 to be in a bit of limbo. After all, Season 2 only wrapped up at the beginning of October with the season finale “Fortunate.” The 12-episode season started in mid-July, picking up after the cliffhanger at the end of Season 1.

A Dystopian Future

Syfy’s The Ark is set in a dystopian future, about 100 years ahead of our current time (though it feels longer), and humanity is on a pretty singular mission. Namely, they are trying to colonize other planets fast because Earth is going to be in a hand basket.

Ark One is in charge of acting like, well, an Ark for humanity and is taking a group of would-be survivors and colonists to a new planet. Except all of the bad stuff happens at once, and everyone on the ship who has even a little bit of a clue about running things kicks the bucket.

That leaves the remaining folks in a fight for survival in space.

Who Is Coming Back?

If The Ark Season 3 were to make it to Syfy, one would have to think that Dean Devlin is back. He created the show and is known for his work in the sci-fi space, specifically with Roland Emmerich over the years. He’s got Stargate, Independence Day, and Godzilla under his belt. And on the television front, there’s been Leverage and The Librarians, to name just a few. He and Jonathan Glassner act as The Ark showrunners.

And in terms of cast, The Ark has a number of interwoven characters with the cast led by a trio of folks who are left as the highest-ranking officials on the ship. There’s  Christie Burke as Lt. Sharon Garnet, Richard Fleeshman as Lt. James Brice, and Shalini Peiris as Dr. Sanjivni Kabir.

Season 2 Ended With Finding A Home?

Fans are also hoping for The Ark Season 3 because Season 2 finally saw the crew get somewhere.

In “Fortunate,” they get to Trappist-1B, a planet where they might be able to put down human roots. Is there something wrong with this planet, and might they still be in danger? Duh, this is television, after all. But the story was still ramping up.

It remains to be seen what Syfy plans to do with The Ark Season 3.
